Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Rhythms
Review: A really refreshing read. Donna Hill's writing style is reminiscent of a modern Zora Neale Hurston. It is great when a book actually touches your heart because the characters and storyline is so well thought out. I recommend that every booklover read it.

Summary: Compelling story line...
Review: Donna Hill has done it again. This is a real to life story. Cora and David portray a real love story. This is all about forgiveness and honesty. Parris is a winner in this story, but I wish that Emma would have made a better choice and better decisions concerning Parris and Cora. This is one story that everyone needs to read, really enjoyable. This book would make a great movie, as long as they don't try to alter it for t.v.

Summary: RHYTHMS IS A DEFINITE MUST READ BY AVID READERS EVERYWHERE!
Review: I actually read this book a few months ago and thought I had posted my review of it. This book is a definite MUST READ by all serious "avid" readers. Donna is a wonderful/gifted storyteller. I enjoyed the story from start to finish. The character development, the family drama....all made the story most enjoyable. If you are looking for a really great read, add this to your list. In fact, pick it up today...even the cover speaks well of the story itself. (it's beautiful)

My only regret is .....I didn't read it sooner!

Summary: I wanted more.
Review: I found this book to have lots of holes in the story line. More time was spent on Cora's story than on Emma and Paris which could have been expanded. There was so much more that could have been done with the storyline. How many parents/grandparents of african american descent raised a bi-racial child during that time period? What were the obstacles to the parents and what kind of trials and tribulations did the child go through in an all black neighborhood? I read this book quickly thinking that there would be more substance than actually existed. I won't say it was a hard read it just left the reader wanting more.

Summary: the rhythms were offbeat
Review: I seem to be at odds with most of the other reviewers who thought the book started slow and later picked up speed. I personally was rather intrigued with the beginning and very interested in Cora's story. I agree with the Publisher's Weekly review that it could have been a great characterization of Cora and her struggles, but it passed over many years to start the story of Emma and quickly became uneven and full of holes. The part of Parris was so short and uninteresting compared to the other two that I believe even Ms. Hill grew bored with her rambling story and just wanted to hurry up and finish it. For a more well-written (minus the empty fluff) generational story of mothers and daughters, read Cane River by Lalita Tademy or the Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

Summary: A Rhythmic Journey
Review: Rhythms by Donna Hill is an intricately woven tale of three generations of women. Cora, the daughter of a Baptist preacher, has the voice of an angel. Cora leaves the small town of Rudell, MS to pursue her dream of becoming a famous singer. However, after a tragic event occurs, she returns to Rudell harboring a big secret. After giving birth to a white-looking baby, she is forced to live in shame and isolation.

Cora's daughter, Emma, is an outcast because she looks differently than everyone else in town. As soon as she can, she runs away to live in New York as a white woman, figuring life would be so much easier there. Emma finally finds happiness and the perfect man. All is well until Emma becomes pregnant She is determined to do whatever it takes not to allow her secret to be exposed.

Parris, Cora's granddaughter, inherits Cora's exceptional singing voice. Cora showers Parris with the love she was unable to give Emma. Parris also leaves Rudell for the big city to pursue a singing career just as her grandmother did years ago. Again, tragedy strikes, but this time, secrets are revealed instead of hidden.

Rhythms is excellent novel that draws on all of your emotions. It is a book of lessons: lessons of love, acceptance, and forgiveness. Hill's lyrical writing and descriptive prose transports you into the book alongside the characters. You smell the aroma of down home cooking and hear the rhythmic sounds of music of the times. Rhythms truly shows the scope of this esteemed writer's talent.

Summary: Excellent Read
Review: Rhythyms is a book about the choices that the characters (Cora, Emma and Parris) made in their lives and the effect it had on future events. It discloses the strength these characters possesed to overcome adversities. It's about forgiving their love ones for past lies and deceit. It's about the peace and cleansing they felt as these lies are revealed. It's Donna Hill at her best.

Summary: VERY DISAPPOINTED
Review: This book started off kind of slow. I was getting very discouraged in the beginning but as I continued to read it finally picked up. It was an interesting tale of dreams and reality. There were hard lessons learned in this book. There were choices made that affected generation after generation. I can say the author kept you on feet wondering if the secrets of the past would come out to change the future.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Must have
Review: This is beyond a must read, this is a must have. I enjoyed all the characters, and the imagery in this book was spectacular. Loved it!
