Summary: From a Buddhist view
Review: I am a Japanese, I consider myself Buddhist. Actually Budhism in Thailand is classified as a sect called Hinayana, which has more fundamental doctorine than Mahayana the sect I belongs to. Anyway, Mom Ratchawong Kurit Pramoj's purpose of this work is explore the mystery of Karma, the sin of Buddhism's philosophy. I am not sure M.R. Kukrit's purpose was successfull. But one thing I can say is that the idea of Karma of taught by M.R. kukrit and the one in Japan is very similar. The conclusion of the story is very simple; everyone in the boat needed to death. But the reason is different by each person and very complicated. Maybe some of western people who are not instruted to know Buddhism would not understand why this person must die. I cannot explain why to them either. If you are borne Buddhist, you will understand. I am so surprised that I had the same sense of value about religion with Thai people.

Summary: Classic Thai Story
Review: M.R. Kukrit Pramoj is a renouned, Thai author famous for several pieces he wrote during his lifetime. The stories in this book gives the reader a feel for Thai culture and values, especially as they relate to Buddhism. It was a very well crafted (and translated) story worth reading, especially if you are interested in learning more about the essence of Thai culture.
