Rating: Summary: He was known as a gunslinger Review: "Heller with a Gun," by Louis L'Amour, is an interesting novel that was first published in 1955. Although it took me a little while to get into the novel, which is unusual because I am usually hooked from the first page of L'Amour's books, the plot picked up and became captivating.King Marby became known for his skills with a gun at a young age, but it wasn't something he advertised. Marby meets a group of performers. He becomes concerned for their safety because they intend on leaving to another town during a snowstorm. It could also be that Marby has an eye for one of the young women in the group. The entertainers hire a man to guide them to another town, but Marby becomes suspicious of their guide and decides to follow them, only to find the entertainers were in more trouble than they ever imagined.
Rating: Summary: The King Mabry way Review: Easily in my top ten L'amours! The story may sound familiar - innocents led astray by sweettalking baddies and hero to the rescue. Thinking about it it seems to fuse "Westward the tide" and "The empty land"! But still the way L'amour develops the story - his dark portrayal of the hero - the way he builds the relationships between the characters - the action scenes - the not-so unpredictable twist in the end (quite like "The Empty Land"), give the work its individuality that will remain in your memory for a while. It still is in mine after years!
