Rating: Summary: Utterly Preposterous Review: Virtually every plot element and twist in this book is just not believable, on any level. Characters behave in ways unlike any person you've ever met. Investigators jump instantly to completely unlikely, off-the-wall conclusions--that just happen to be correct. Secret Service agents act like total idiots. Convenient coincidences appear by the dozen. This book is an utter mess.
Rating: Summary: Not his best Review: I was disappointed with this book. I always look forward to reading his latest but found this one lacking. Don't waste your time on this one. Read Absolute Power. It's his best.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Thriller Review: I have read four of David Baldacci's books with mixed reviews. Split Second is by far my favorite book. The plot has everything I look for in an exciting book: Good characterization, a plot that ties into the past, short chapters, and a fast moving story line with lots of twists! I highly recommend this book as one that you cannot put down!
Rating: Summary: Impressive page turner Review: This is the first suspense/mystery novel I have read from Baldacci and I have to say that I was pretty impressed all in all. Baldacci's ability to develop the characters of Sean King, Michelle Maxwell and flirtatious Joan sets up a suspenseul ride that I actually found myself caring about.Split Second is a quick read that I found myself instantly drawn to from the beginning. I do agree that 2/3 through the book the mass introduction of characters, suspects, and theories made connecting the dots a bit confusing. I found myself having to pause and try to put all of the relationships together more than once. I recommend this book as an exciting, pulse pounding read and hope that the door Baldacci left open for a series to follow comes to fruition.
Rating: Summary: Good start, weird finish Review: Being a native Virginian, I'm a big David Baldacci fan. This book starts out great. The action and plot are gripping. Then about 3/4 into the book, the story bogs down, and becomes difficult to trudge through. Perhaps one problem is the use of too many characters to follow. I had a hard time keeping characters straight. The final 1/4 of the book takes some bizarre (if not unbelievable) turns. Overall, not a bad read.
Rating: Summary: Big Hat and no Cattle Review: A page turner all right, but when done with the book, I wished I had my time back. Ending was contrived and grossly artificial. Made Da Vinci Code look even better by comparison. Save your money.
Rating: Summary: Captivating, but incredibly disappointing Review: Well, I couldn't put the book down. Picked it up on a Saturday and finished in on a Monday. The problem was that I was pissed at myself and even more pissed at Baldacci that I wasted two days reading this tripe. Most of the reviewers on this site are either on narcotics or on Baldacci's payroll. What could have been an amazing book, beginning to end, turned into one of the great clunkers of all time. This book has about the most insultingly inane ending of any suspense/thriller I've ever read. I'll have to think twice before I read a Baldacci novel again.
Rating: Summary: Good thing the beginning was better than the ending Review: Good thing the beginning and the first 3/4 of the book were good, or I never would have finished the book. The ending was too unrealistic and by that point there were so many characters introduced that it was hard to remain interested.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Thriller Review: Once again Mr. Baldacci keeps you guessing -- even if you do read the last page. The solution came completely out of left field; Mr. Baldacci never lets on who the villian is until the final showdown. Keep up the good work; can't wait until your next book. By the way, would like to read more about Mr. King and Ms. Maxwell.
Rating: Summary: A Twisting Mystery That Never Lets Go Review: David Baldacci once again displays that he is simply one of the best writers in America today with another attention grabbing, rapidly paced, action-mystery-adventure. You will create strong attachment to his characters as they twist you through an intriguing plot. They are wholly likeable and believable and you can't help but develop a true vested interest in their lives and decisions. In Split Second, Baldacci pulls together two presidential candidate mysteries set eight years apart and weaves them into a fast moving, complex and plausible story. Baldacci demonstrates his knack for letting the story unfold like a quick drive down a country road with unmarked curves that keep you guessing which way the story will turn next. Be forewarned, the story grabs you on the first page and carries you straight away to the end, as I literally had to finish it the same day I started.
