Review: ...in the finale. i keep reading reviews about the ending being completely unexpected but, i saw it as a possible outcome almost from the beginning. i was hoping he wasn't going to end it the way he did but was almost convinced of the outcome about 50 pages from the end...one reviewer mentioned it as a sell-out to the movie industry and i have to agree. the story seems to leave one hanging for a sequel. still, though, i couldn't put the dang thing down and lehane remains one of my favourite writers. actually, i'm having trouble deciding whether i like the book or not. it's definitely one i won't forget...

Summary: Psychological Thriller Questions Reality
Review: Dennis Lehane's SHUTTER ISLAND is an engrossing, thought-provoking, psychological thriller that cleverly challenges the reader to evaluate the main character's sanity. The year is 1954 and U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of Rachel Sorrando,a patient who has mysteriously vanished from Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane. As a mid-fifties psychiatric hospital located on a North Atlantic island directly in the path of a hurricane, the setting is used to good effect as it conjures up visions of psycho-surgery and drug experimentation on deranged, psychotic killers imprisoned within its dark and cold, storm-ravaged walls. The reader accompanies Daniels in his search for Sorrando while he meets and interacts with the colorful, enigmatic characters who populate the hospital and eventually challenge his grasp of reality. Without giving away the story, by the climax there are several well-spun storylines weaving the plot into a possible deception of a grand scale. Along with Daniels, the reader also questions what was really happenning to him. As I was trying to decide, I was reminded of the movie version of A BEAUTIFUL MIND in which the audience saw the realism of John Nash's delusions and believed they were real just as he did. Likewise, readers of SHUTTER ISLAND are immersed in the workings of the mind of Teddy Daniels and must decide what is real and what isn't. Very Real! Very Challenging! Very Well Done!!

Summary: Shutter Island - Lehane
Review: In this book two marhalls investigate the missing of a patient on the mental institute called: Shutter Island. It's an institute completely cut of the rest of the world. Only the worst go here. That's all you need to know about this book before you read it. It's an awsome psychological thiller. Nothing is what it seems. I recommend you don't read too many review because it will spoil the book in the long run. Best book I've read in a while. Certainly worth 5 stars.

Review: "Shutter Island" by Dennis Lehane During the summer of 1954, two US marshals traveled to Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island to explore the whereabouts of a missing mental patient (or maybe to investigate whether the hospital was performing illegal surgery on its residents). One of the marshals (Teddy Daniels) may have had yet one other hidden reason for visiting the asylum. This thriller is an unforgettable page-turner. Ultimately, the plot will unfold, secrets will be exposed and the reader will either be pleasantly surprised or overtly shocked by the final outcome. Will Teddy ever escape from the island? Will atrocities and/or illegal experiments at Ashecliffe Hospital be revealed? What happened to the missing mental patient? If you want the answers, you will have to read this book for yourself. An extremely talented author, Dennis Lehane has all the right stuff when it comes to crafting the perfect thriller. Apparently, Lehane's previous novel "Mystic River" has already been made into a hit movie. My Grade: A

Summary: The ending drove me crazy
Review: I was pleased to read a really good book and not be disappointed by Dennis. However, I'm following all the clues and thinking I know what's going on and voilla!!!! What happened and who do I know that read it and can confirm it??? I guess I shouldn't have believed everything I read according to the last page. Good read - enjoy!

Summary: More of a movie treatment than a novel
Review: This book will make a good movie, and in fact, works better as a movie treatment than a novel. Lehane has been one of my favorite authors for years and when the excellent "Mystic River" was optioned and produced by Clint Eastwood, the last thing I expected was for Dennis to get so wound up in that big bucks scenario that he would fashion his next book not to be a great novel, but to instead be a movie treatment. I see Matthew McConaughey in the lead, and beyond that I just don't care. Since I know the hard-to-fathom ending I won't be running out to the theater to see this one. To be fair, it's a fairly good story and it's not a bad book, but it ain't Lehane at his best and he's no longer on my list on favorite authors after selling out like this. Your mileage may vary.
