Rating: Summary: One of His Best! Review: John Sandford's "Prey" series are one of the few books that I will but the second I see it on the shelf of my local bookstore. I have been disappointed in that in several of Sandford's books did not seem to meet the standards he established in the earlier "Prey" novels. But in Secret Prey John Sandford has raised the Bar and re-established the Lucas Davenport of old. Complex, smart and tough with enough failings to make him human and a character to whom a reader can relate. The only other character I can think of close to Davenport is Spenser. A good read.
Rating: Summary: Better than the last "Prey" novel, but he's done better. Review: Secret Prey is a good yarn and better than Mr. Sandford's last "prey" outing, but I don't think its up to the standard he set in Rules of Prey and Eyes of Prey and one or two of the other earlier Davenport tales. Much like in Night Prey, Davenport doesn't seem to be doing much in the first half of this new book. Things keep happening around him and it seems like he's just a spectator. The second half of the book is much better. In some of the earlier stories Davenport learns who the bad guy is earlier on in the story and it was great riding along while Lucas matched the bad guy wit for wit, smarts for smarts and viciousness for viciousness. Watching him plot the demise of the villains was more exciting. The last couple novels I think were a little more tame. None of this means I didn't like Secret Prey. I did and I'll probably read it once or twice more (as I have with all his other stories) in the year or so I have to wait for Mr. Sandford's next gem.
Rating: Summary: Vintage Sandford-he just gets better and better! Review: Lucas Davenport is at his most believable best in this latest of the "Prey" series from John Sandford. This novel is articulate and gripping at the same time. An unequivocal 10!
Rating: Summary: Questions, questions, questions!!!!! Review: I'm still waiting to hear about the interview on page 114 of the book. Why does Davenport use the name McDonald when interviewing the gal claiming to have committed the murder of Kresge? I must have missed something.
Rating: Summary: thumbs up Review: John Sandford intends to thrill, so grab your beach towels and take this book when you suntan this summer on the beach or by the pool. You'll find something new that turns the screw in chapter after chapter (suspense I tried for in my novel THE SHAPE by Craig Furnas), and builds the tension to a first-rate climax. C. F.
Rating: Summary: A pretty good ride! Review: I'm new to John Sanford, but I read two previous books before starting "Secret Prey." I thought it might be nice to know a little bit of the hero's history. The two books I read were pretty brutal and graphic, but I liked Lucas Davenport. I read "Secret Prey" in one day...and I enjoyed it. I thought the plot moved right along and I liked the little side trip the author took with the silver-haired opium club. I look forward to other Lucas Davenport stories...and I like him with the lady cop much better than I liked him with the lady surgeon. The lady cop understands the nature of his work and she doesn't take anything from him that she doesn't give right back, in spades. There's more fire and vinegar in this relationship and I thought it really rang true. "Secret Prey" is a great summer book.....
Rating: Summary: More please. Review: Lucas Davenport is back and as good as ever. I missed his lady friend, but remembering what happened in the last book. I can understand why she needs a break from Lucas and his intensity. I recommend this book to anyone who is not squeamish. If you are, John Sanford and Lucas Davenport are not for you. I bought it and read it in one evening and now I have to wait a year for the next one. So many books and so little time.
Rating: Summary: Keep them coming! Review: This author's work never gets stale! The "Prey" novels are great reads. Lucas is back, gathering steam through the novel - and is back in top form by the conclusion. This book is a great example of good characterization, well developed plot twists and turns, and snappy, believable dialogue. As the reader and Lucas figure out who killed Jim Kresge, the reader sits back and watches in admiration as Lucas gathers the evidence to prove it. If you haven't read it, get it today and get started!
Rating: Summary: Sanford Delivers Again! Review: I've read all of the "Prey" books and this is one of his best. I couldn't put down the book once I've started. At first, I thought the murder seems too simple for Lucas Davenport but instead it turns out to be complexed and engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and commend John Sanford for the ability to keep and exceed the standard of a "Prey" book.
Rating: Summary: Lucas is back to his old self! Review: I've read every one of the Prey novels, and while I don't agree that SECRET PREY is the best of the lot, it is engrossing with lots of twists and turns. Lucas Davenport is back to his old sexy self (I, for one, was supremely bored with his "domestication" at the hands of Weather), the criminal in question is yet another hard edged psychopath (something Sandford does very well) and Davenport's new "partner" is definitely my kind of woman! All in all this is a must read for "Prey..." fans.
