Rating: Summary: what happen to Stuart Woods? Review: I read the first 100 pages and wondered when the book would begin. Very little story, poor character development. I look forward to my favorite author's releases but this was a big disapointment.
Rating: Summary: A Disappointment Review: This is a quickly read book, with short chapters. The premise is great, but doesn't live up to it's promise. Holly Barker is the police chief of Orchid Beach, but spends little time on the job throughout the book. After the murder of her fiance' during a bank robbery on their wedding day,the plot veers off in several directions. Her grief is short-lived and she teams up with the FBI on a tangential move with them, seeking information about a group of white supremacists that seemed linked to the bank robbery. Her father,Ham,infiltrates the group, discovering that they have plans beyond anyone's belief, with the bank robbery being peripheral. In spite of the intelligence of the leaders of the group they haven't a clue that Ham is not what he seems. The story continues unbelievably on until the incredulous climax. The characters are so thinly developed you cannot get a grasp of any one of them. Ham is totally unreal,as an almost superhuman being. It's an ok read, but it's hard to get into this very complicated plot and find it remotely believable.
Rating: Summary: lot of empty paper, no ink Review: After many of Woods books, This is the worst one yet. Doubt I will go back to the well. Seems he just felt he needed to pen one and didn't have much to include. Not close to his other books
Rating: Summary: Stuart Woods does it again! Review: My dad sent me this book and I loved it! I read it in 3 days ( and thats not easy considering I have four kids and work from home!) I couldn't put it down. Its a quick and easy read with all the action and drama we've come to expect from Staurt Woods. Its a great story and hooks you right away. If you have ever enjoyed a book by S. Woods, this one you MUST read! Enjoy it!
Rating: Summary: Disappointed in PA. Review: Because I enjoyed Orchid Beach so much I was really looking forward to this one. What a disaster!! Why was Jackson killed off?? He and Holly were so good together, he was an intelligent, fun man and now what, is she going to become a tough old broad, who only lives for her job? I like Ham and Daisy, is one smart dog, however they could not carry this book. Too much talk and not enough action and if Harry Crisp is based on a real life FBI agent and if he is the norm, God help us all!!! I know there is inter-agency rivalry, but I would hope they get their act together for the sake of this country. Are the cameos of Stone Barrington going to lead somewhere? He would do well to ditch Arrington and get better acquinted with Holly. My library really wasted their money on this one!!
Rating: Summary: TWO VOICES = TWICE AS GOOD AUDIO Review: Just as two heads are better than one two voices, those of Dick Hill and Susie Breck, beat one in this satisfying reading of the second adventure of Police Chief Holly Barker and her erstwhile companion, Daisy, an unbelievable Doberman. Holly isn't thinking work but wedding as she's about to tie the knot with her boyfriend, Jackson Oxenhandler. The path to the altar turns rocky when a crime occurs - a bank robbery in Orchid Beach, Florida, and a vicious one at that as the thieves take everything with them except for a dead body. Her investigation takes Holly and her father, Ham, a retired Army sergeant to a rather strange town, Lake Winachobee. Despite its name not much is placid in this little burg as it turns out to be a hotbed of white supremacists who are planning the assassination of an important leader. Stuart Woods has once again proffered a rapid fire plot and a stunning conclusion. - Gail Cooke
Rating: Summary: Thought this was going somewhere... Review: I really enjoyed the beginning of this book. Felt that it had potential. However, after about the first 100 pages, I felt that this was a James Patterson wannabe. Two to three page chapters with a lot of empty pages in between. This could have been condensed to a 150 page novella. There was no tension towards the end...everything just worked out much too easily. I liked the fact that the heroine's father, Ham, went undercover into a subversive group bent on assasination. But could top government agencies be so bent on their own glorification that they would risk the lives of important officials? I think not. Was very disappointed toward the end of this book...and at the 5 star review that Harriet Klausner (my hero) gave it. I have read every Stuart Woods book and felt that this was a major disappointment.
Rating: Summary: Not So Blue Review: I had hoped that ORCHID BLUES would be on a par with Stone Barrington, but alas, it is not. It is a quick read but there is no real character development and I think Woods does himself and his readers a dis-service. The characters are so poorly drawn that I lost interest in them very quickly. This book is ordinary... I can't recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Great reading experience Review: Holly Barker is going to the chapel to get married. Her best friend Daisy, her Doberman Pincher, will serve as the maid of honor. However, Holly's elation abruptly turns to horror when her fiancé is murdered during a bank robbery that turned violent. Holly leads the official investigation that takes her to a town not found on the most detailed of maps. The inhabitants are white supremacists who recruit Holly's dad Ham into joining their organization. Ham pretends to join the militia and quickly assumes a key role amidst the group. Holly and her law enforcement peers obtain Ham's cooperation and he places listening devices in the organization's encampment. This enables them to learn that Ham is selected to assassinate a VIP, but no one knows whom the intended victim is. Unless they can learn the identity of the target, someone will die. Stuart Woods has his more famous character Stone Barrington makes cameo appearances in ORCHID BLUES, which allows fans to feel a greater connection to the Barker series. Holly is a humorous independent soul who copes with grief by diving headfirst into a mystery filled with more twists and turns than that found in a maze. This is a good read on a cold winter's night. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Didn't anyone else notice? Review: Good read, enjoyable, but I have to complain on two points:
Sure, Stone Barrington makes a cameo appearance, for no reason at all except that we like him and he's easy on the eye. BUT - he's there to buy a plane, tail number November 1 2 3 Tango Foxtrot. Then in the end, when the bad guys are escaping, they escape in a plane with the tail number - you guessed it - November 1 2 3 Tango Foxtrot. Did they steal Stone's plane? Was the mysterious John actually Stone Barrington? NO! Wow, what a great plot twist was missed here. Or maybe Mr. Woods just likes that number - maybe he has a plane, too, with the tail number - well, you get the point.
The other big boo-boo was having the bad guy go to Ham's for a drink, and nobody thought to get his fingerprints off the glass. Well, he could've been wearing gloves, but you'd think someone would notice THAT.
All in all a good read, doesn't require a lot of mental investment on the readers' part, and a fairly good description of Florida's Treasure Coast.
