Rating: Summary: Terrific Psycho Sexual Thriller Review: "Bone Parade" takes the art of the thriller to a whole new level. The sexual tension that Nykanen creates with his deranged psychopath is frighteningly real. As a reader I found myself sickly attracted to the main character--turned on several times during the read. Perhaps I too fell prey to his psycho spell! I was excited to read this new work by Nykanen. His first book "Hush" was a page turner that scared me to death. Unlike "Hush" which leaves you double locking your doors--scared of the boogie man outside, "Bone Parade" made me scared of my own inner thoughts. A real accomplishment .
Rating: Summary: Psychologically accurate Review: Although the Bone Parade is finely crafted, what I found most impressive was Nykanen's depth of psychological understanding. The individual's personalities and how they play out under the increasing stresses being placed on them are in line with current thought in object-relations and family theory--and hence thoroughly believable. A chilling page-turner.
Rating: Summary: very hard to finish...although I did Review: An artist who casts his sculptures from the bodies of dying families...an art teacher who sends her best student to study with him...the current family waiting for death so disfunctional that the daughter turns against them and seduces the sculptor. Trapped in a bone cage below his barn. Wow, too freaky for me. My suggestion...if you ever meet Mark Nykanen in a bar...run for your life!!!!
Rating: Summary: Vivid, scary read Review: Enjoyed might not be exactly the right word for how I felt in reading this book, but it was certainly thought provoking and hard to put down. Stassler, the sculptor, was particularly strong. Having been involved in art myself, I thought Stassler's thoughts about his sculpture were very believable, though evil in the extreme. The dynamics among the Vanderson family was intriging -- especially Diamond Girl. I am hoping to find out more about her in a future book.
Rating: Summary: Disturbingly Complelling Review: Enter into a killer's mind. Mark Nykanen's newest novel is a suspenseful page turner, that delves into the disturbing thoughts and actions of a relentless killer, bent on creating tortured sculptures.Nykanen details the killer's personality so well lacing morose humor and dark sexual exploits, that the reader is left guilty with intrigue, subconsciously knowing full well just how disturbing the subject matter really is. The plot is well crafted, character's path's intersect - lives are drawn into Ashley Stassler's demonic world. The author has a flare for this genre and has nailed it down solidly. You won't be able to stop reading.
Rating: Summary: Never again. Review: I am only giving this book one star for the simple reason that Amazon won't let me give it zero stars. This is far and away the single worst horror novel (actually, it's quite probably the worst novel, period) that I have ever read. The characters were one-dimensional clichés, the plot was boring and predictable, and as a whole, the book was altogether foul. The only frightening thing about The Bone Parade is the realization that I wasted some six-odd hours of my life reading it.
Rating: Summary: another good read ! Review: I found Bone Parade to be a great suspense thriller.I was kept on my seat many a time. I enjoyed the way Mark Nykanen wove his characters together.I was never sure just what might happen next. My idea of a great read !!
Rating: Summary: Scary, Sexual, Lots of Subtext Review: I found the The Bone Parade incredibly engaging at more than one level. Mark Nykanen works a great deal into a story line with extreme narrative tension. Very hard to put down, but also busy-busy-busy with ideas, not the least of which is the artwork of the two main characters, and how the media in which they work reflects a great deal about who they are. The humor worked for me, and the sexual material was provocative. Finally, the writing is truly first-rate, with powerful passages in a novel that's truly unforgettable. Promise.
Rating: Summary: Finally, a writer who truly frightens Review: I have been around some, two tours in vietnam, police officer, government security, etc., and thought there wasn't an author out there who could get to me. Wrong. Mark Nykanen's Bone Parade is simply wonderful in it's genre. Phooey on the comparisons to Red Dragon, etc., this one stands in it's own spotlight as a truly literate, frightening and original (yes, original - rare these days)tale of madness, obsession, art, love, courage and other worthwhile traits in his characters. Buy this book now and keep the lights on and the doors locked while you read......better yet, hide all the statues, graven images, etc. Maybe they are looking at you.
Rating: Summary: Suspenseful, sexy, disturbing, amazing book! Review: I just loved this book. I've been reading horror novels for the last 20 years and haven't been this knocked over by a book in a very long time. I read the whole book in 2 days. Mark Nykanen is a true dark horror writer, and has given me hope since the passing of my next favorite author, the late great Richard Laymon. Mr. Nykanen gives such spine tingling descriptions of the most torturous, achingly painful and fear-inducing physical and mental trials, I actually felt some of the victim's fear. My breathing became quicker, and my heart rate increased parallel in time with the characters' fear, his writing is that crisp. His villian is suave, intelligent, and very much an everyday person on the outside-always the best "monster" in books, for real people are indeed the scariest monsters of all. Great analogies between perception and reality in art and life, fantastic sexual imagery, and some true surprises and twists I couldn't have predicted. Do yourself a favor, if you're seeking a real creepy trip into a world so bizarre it seems real, buy this book. It is one of the best I've read in years. His other book "Hush" is also incredible, with one of the cruelest psychopaths ever invented.
