Rating: Summary: Steady Decline Review: I am--or should I say was--another major, long time fan of John Sandford and Lucas Davenport but this latest book-one with the greatest of all PREY title--has cured me of that. The plot of the book just does not make sense and characters wander in and out of it with senseless abandon. It appears to have been created by requesting his word processor to put together a plot and descriptions of characters--in one place Weather is described almost identically in paragraphs only half a page apart--continuity issues abound. Very disappointed--wish I had borrowed this one from the library so I could have returned it.
Rating: Summary: Prey series is growing tired Review: Is it just me or is the Lucas Davenport series just not very interesting anymore? Writing as a long-time fan of John Sandford, I am posting this review with a great sense of disappointment. I wanted to like this novel, but I just couldn't.It seems like Sandford has devolved into pure formula when I used to find his books full of originality and surprises. With Easy Prey, we just have the same old cast of characters involved in the same old investigative activities, and none of it is very involving. While I won't give away the identity of the killer for the true fans out there who will have to read this for themselves, I found the ending to be lazy on Sandford's part and thought it made the majority of the book seem irrelevant. In a literary world that offers the likes of Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane, Ridley Pearson and Jeffery Deaver, I would have to say that Sandford is rapidly falling to the bottom of the suspense writer ranks. I find that unfortunate since I remember the days when Sandford could come up with a better plot twist than a new dead body. It seems like in Easy Prey that whenever Sandford loses his bearings he just kills off another minor character. Given the number of death in the novel, it appears that Sandford lost his way far to many times.
Rating: Summary: not the Davenport I once knew! Review: I was very disappointed in the main character. Lucas seemed to be hollow and false, four letter words was not his style in the past. This plot made Lucas seem not too intelligent, not really caring. His in and out referenences to his personal life was only distracting. The ending was out of left field as if the author felt it was time to end this story, it was long and tedious and repeticious. hopefully, Mr. Sandford will take a good rest and his next offering will go back to the quality Davenport. Ill patiently await the next novel and will continue to be a loyal fan.
Rating: Summary: Another Winner from John Sanford Review: One would think that the Lucas Davenport series would be getting a little tired by now. In Easy Prey, John Sanford proves that is anything but true. Davenport is at his best in this twisting and turning suspense thriller. Of course he can't resist his newest "maiden-in-distress" Jael, who's casual attitude towards him only fuels his interest. He feels the tug of the past with his former college flame Catrin. Don't write off Weather, the surgeon he almost married, who is finally interested in him again. While juggling three beautiful, complex women he also manages to solve a series of brutal murders! What a man! If you like thrillers, but haven't made the jump from Nora Roberts, Tami Hoag, or Patricia Cornwell, give this one a try. You'll love it!
Rating: Summary: Easy to say this is Sandfords worst Review: I have been a fan of the "prey" series for some time, and have read all of the previous entries, all of them ranging from good to excellent. Some different adjectives come to mind for this one though: boring, convoluted, and dissapointing, just to name a few. It started off well enough, but went downhill before it was 50 pages in. The character of Lucas Davenport was very flat this time, his only focus outside of the case being the multiple women he was juggling and there were way too many supporting characters, causing you to wonder who was who sometimes. The plot itself was dull and lacking in any suspense or tension. You really didn't care waht happened next, which was good, because nothing of interest ever did happen. And the ending appeared out of left field, but by that point you are just glad its over. You get the feeling that Sandford was sitting around one day when he suddenly realized he had a book due soon, and he just hammered it out quickly on autopilot. A character quips near the end of the book, "This is boring my _ brains out", a quote which could be attributed to the book as well. I hope Sandford and Davenport fare better next time out, I have faith that they will.
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly Disappointed Review: I am an absolutely huge fan of Mr. Sandford's Prey series, but this one let me down! The story and plot was good and I was really into the story til near the end when it seemed that since every character was getting "knocked off" a nobody was picked out of the air to become the main killer. It was reminiscent of Patricia Cornwell's latest works. Disappointing! To destroy a perfect story with a mundane ending such as this one is a letdown. Hopefully the next one in the series will be better.
Rating: Summary: Good But Not Great...3 & 1/2 Stars Review: I'm a great fan of this series and love Lucas Davenport. That said, I would have enjoyed this book alot more had I remotely liked or cared about the person murdered. A supermodel gets murdered after her latest three way sex romp. Her drug dealer gets off'd too. Who cares, ho hum. That made it hard for me to get into the mystery. In the other Prey Books, the murder victims were easier to identify with and thus care about who killed them and why. Lucas and his "gang" are fun and interesting as usual. I did find Lucas's choice of girlfriends in this book a bit trashy (as one other reviewer has pointed out no one in Fiction Land seems to worry about AIDS). There too, he's done better. Worth a read if you have enjoyed the rest of the series. If you haven't started the series, go back and start at the beginning and try to read them in order. They all refer back to stuff that has happened in previous books and this one is no exception. Besides, those early ones will "hook" you alot faster than this one.
Rating: Summary: The Inevitable, Ultimate Disappointment Review: I have read all of the previous books in the "Prey" series by Sanford and have been thrilled, frightened, and amazed by his work. Unfortunately, my previous experiences with Sanford did not prepare me for this poor excuse of an effort. The plot is obvious and even if it wasn't, you wouldn't care. The characters, even the formerly ever engaging Davenport, are wooden to the point of being comical. We can only hope Sanford got the bad one "out of his system" and that his next effort will again enthrall us.
Rating: Summary: Cheated on the Ending Review: This was the usual great Sandford read. He grabs my attention with the first page and usually deprives me of sleep -- and he did that with this one. However, he cheated on the killer I won't say how but I think other mystery fans will agree with me. Nevertheless I still give it a 5 star because I don't read his books to figure out the killer I read them for the dialouge and the scenes he sets so well. Also I really liked the ending and can't wait to see how he works it out. I like Weather, she got my vote over the old flame who annoyed me.
Rating: Summary: Was Sandford facing a deadline? Review: This book reminds me of the term papers I wrote in college the night before they were due. You're facing a deadline, so you have to write something. I found this book MUCH harder to read than his earlier works and the characters much harder to care about. There were so many characters I found it hard to keep up with who was who and who did what. It might just be me, but I can't remember his other books reading in this fashion. It was almost as if someone else wrote the book and just put Sandford's name on it. If you are new to the Prey series, please do not start with Easy Prey. You are likely to be disappointed and never pick another one up. That would be a loss. Start with one of the earlier Prey books, perhaps Silent Prey. Anything but Easy Prey.
