Rating: Summary: Shibumi masters all... The true art of the perfect lover... Review: Shibumi is the ultimate best... I being only 14 have lent this book to 3 others and they have died to borrow it again! I was first lent this book some time back and I went insane with Nicholai! I related to Le Cagot, felt for De Lhandes, looked up to Kishikawa, and idolized Otake! I grew to love this book each time I read it! Truly one of my favorite books! Number 2 on my Top Ten List!
Rating: Summary: Beautiful language Review: Once you read Shibumi, you will want to read it again and again, as I have. Each time, appreciation of Trevanian's writing ability increases. Some sentences are so magnificently constructed, any reader who loves the English language will want to go back to the first word of the sentence and truly enjoy each word again.
Rating: Summary: It's above all qualifications Review: It is not only a book, it's philosophy and everythihg related to life-style. To understand it , you have to understand Nicholai Hel... and his way.
Rating: Summary: Truly mind provoking. It leaves you thinking, years later. Review: My father was the one who originally recommended this novel, almost two years ago. He felt it was the best he had ever read, and on reading it again, it had changed his life. I have only read it once, but often find myself pondering the many intricacies of this incredible story.
Rating: Summary: A book that changes peoples lives Review: I first read Shibumi back in 1981. I was changed forever. Since then, I have lent, bought it as gifts, and encouraged those who I thought would appreciate the importance of the book. People laugh when I say it is the best novel of the 20th Century. It was given to my non-book reading father in 1986; since then he has become a serious reader of fiction and historical novels. The characters are gripping, real and are perfectly placed within the story line(s). An education in history, geography, geology, politics, and Eastern philosophies are waiting for those who are willing to take the journey. I still have the original hardback, but re-read a paperback version at least once a year.
Rating: Summary: Shibumi Is a Stellar Novel Review: I first read Shibumi quite young, and was taken with its "effortless perfection"; I have read it many times since. I attribute my interest in Eastern culture to this book.
Rating: Summary: My favorite book of all time Review: This is my favorite book of all time, and I was completely surprised to find so many positive reviews here. A co-worker recommended this book to me years ago, but wouldn't tell me what it was about - just told me to read it, and I'm glad I did. I have a paperback copy, and recently found a hardcover copy at a booksale - I don't know how anyone could part with it! Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!
Rating: Summary: Perfect book from a perfect author Review: I have read this book 2 years ago hasardously. In year I havefinished reading all of his books.
I think that Shibumi is his bestbook.
One can say that this book`s subject is simple.I understand why people can critisize this book in
this way.
This book demands humor. If you just read it like
a standard novel you cant catch its spirit. It says
much more than it is written. END
Rating: Summary: Masterpiece Review: Shibumi is the best best-seller book i have ever read, if it can be called a best seller. In my opinion it is worth to place it not in common best seller themes, but it has a unique place all above them, forget Clancy, Ludlum, Cussler or Chricton; this is a MASTERPIECE. I have to admit Trevanian's other books are much below this novel, except for The Summer of Katya which is also quite well.
Rating: Summary: Richly textured, complex, and fascinating Review: I first read this book several years ago and it remains one of my favorites. If Ludlum and Clancy are fast food,(which I often eat and enjoy), then Shibumi is a multi-course French meal, with some Basque wine. I must also say that I have not enjoyed the other Trevanian books any where near as much as I liked Shibumi.
