Summary: Incredible! Shibumi is my favorite book.

Summary: Really interesting book- not your usual paperback trash
Review: I really liked this book. The writing is far superior than most other paperback trash, and the concept/story were original and unique.

I think the parts about the super computer is a bit dated now.. but it's interesting to see how Trevanian envisioned the future of computers back in 1990.

I can agree that the American bashing was uncalled for, but I'll overlook it due to the originality of the story and the wonderful writing style of Trevanian. Definetly worth reading!

Summary: Perfection
Review: Trevanian has written a magnificent novel. It is a wonderful read that integrates elements of enlightenment, thrills, and espionage. I bought the book many years ago when it was first published and loved it thoroughly. It remains one of my favorites today. I find myself drawn to read it again every year or so. The title "Shibumi" represents a state of effortless perfection, and perfection is exactly what Trevanian has written. I recommend it to everyone.

Summary: State of Mind
Review: Having read the book longer ago than I care to remember, I have recently brought it to mind again when trying to recapture times when things were great for me. The title became synonymous with perfection and so here I am visiting amazon for the 1st time ever to track it down.

Clear evidence that it makes powerful reading

Summary: Effortless perfection that is SHIBUMI
Review: I was 19 when I read SHIBUMI. Some 10 years later, it still is my favorite. It changed my outlook on life. My copy is bound by duct tape, respect, and love. Whenever times look glum, I always return to the place that gives me strength. I think it takes a certain breed to understand Trevanian. TRY IT!!! TRY THEM ALL!!!! You won't be disappointed. Courage!!!

Summary: One of the best thrillers/mysteries/adventures ever
Review: Shibumi offers a wild anti-hero who is critical of modern ways, especially consumerism at the cost of environmentalism. The protagonist is the very essence of cosmopolitan: ranging from the far east to the north of Spain, this book introduces the reader to the Basques of Northern Spain/ Southern France, the Japanese game of Go and to the extreme sport of spelunking.

Still this book has much more, a cynical sense of humor, a breathtaking ride and exposure to some of the more extreme pursuits either physically or intellectually.

I envy everyone who has yet to read this treasure!

Summary: Great Hero
Review: Trevenian has created an unusually sympathetic character in Nicholai Hel, given his occupation of professional assasin.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Superb: aesthetics translated into practice
Review: This book is a stunning achievment in popular literature. It is at is best as a character study of an extraordinary individual, Nicholai, who persues a sublime objective: shibumi. The latter connotes effortless perfection, aesthetic is action, peacefulness in practice. It is as if an aesthetic idea is not simply a concept, but a potential world view and a manner of conducting one's self. While the plot is interesting (international intrigue, action, and assasination) it is Nicholai's goal of shibumi, and how he evolves towards it that is most enthralling and enlightening. It is an audacious work of fiction
