Rating: Summary: Sleep No More Review: First, let me admit that I read more literature than best sellers. But a year ago, I discovered that Greg Iles told great stories -- not great literature but fun-to-read pageturners. With his latest novel, however, he lost me! Sleep No More is supernatural nonsense with a focus on sex lives of a bunch of poorly developed and stupid characters. Hard as I tried, I couldn't suspend belief and kept betting on an ending that counted on conspiracy -- not the ability of a totally unlikeable dead character to enter the souls of the living! Absurd!
Rating: Summary: blockbuster of the year Review: Gre Iles is a genius! His "Sleep no more" is a facinating read that is in the catagory of a "blockbuster". This novel is a cross between "Fatal Attraction" and "Sixth Sense" but much, much more intense. The prose is exceptional and moving, emotional and mysterious all in one. The characters are real and "alive" so to speak. One has to read it, for no review can do it justice. I have read all of Mr. Iles works and this novel is awesome. I beg you to indulge, you wont be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: chilling paranormal thriller Review: John Waters is a geologist living with his wife Lily and his seven-year-old daughter Annelise in his hometown of Natchez, Mississippi. He is reasonably contented with his lot in life until Eve Sumner comes into his sphere and changes everything he believed in. The first time he sees her, she mouths the word "soon" to him, something his obsessive dead lover used to do.When Eve and Waters are alone for the first time, she tries to convince him that she is Mallory Gray Candler, his college sweetheart who developed a fatal attraction for him. Eve tells him things that only Mallory can know and she explains her knowledge by stating that her soul transmigrated into many bodies, her soul purpose to dominate the host's personality. Eventually, they begin a torrid affair one that ends when Waters, at the peak of his climax, blacks out. When he come to, Eve is dead, marks of strangulation around her neck. His friend offers him an alibi while his lawyer tells him somebody is trying to set him up, but he knows the truth is out there somewhere smack in the middle of the supernatural. Greg Isles is a versatile multi-talented author, who has a unique voice and never writes about the same thing twice. Against the background of an illicit love affair and a murder investigation, the author forces the reader to question the concepts of life, death and the soul. The results are a chilling paranormal thriller that will be put on this reviewer's keeper shelf. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Not my favorite Iles! Review: Greg Iles has been one of my favorite authors. However, this one totally disappointed me. I hated the fact that the protagonist was so wrapped up in his prior "love life" that he couldn't recognize the worth of his present marriage. I do not wish to give too much away, but his whole story-line was ridiculous. Unless I am reading science fiction, I hate for an author to go beyond the realm of reality. Sorry. Iles prefaced his book with a thank you and an apology. He stated that he appreciated the fact that his readers let him delve into unchartered waters...that he could experiment with new topics. Greg, this just didn't make it for me. It was a tiresome, long- lasting read. I'm glad I'm done. It became a chore.
Rating: Summary: Page turner...could have been great instead of good... Review: Spoiler alert...if the author could have rationally resolved the terrific suspense without resorting to soul transfer, this book would have been great. The characters were extremely well developed and the setting in Natchez, Miss. was a delight. I want to visit!! Entertaining...I suggest checking this book out from your library instead of purchase.
Rating: Summary: Definite stay up all night read! Review: Greg Iles has done it again with "SLEEP NO MORE." I enjoyed his previous book "DEAD SLEEP," but this is even better. I thought it was great of him to put that note in the beginning of the book telling the reader to get ready for a wild ride which is exactly what he takes you on. It's a creepy thriller that's full of suspense and keeps you turning the pages needing to see what happens next. I read it in less than a day and loved this book! I highly recommend it to anyone in search of a great read.
Rating: Summary: Whoa! Review: After the success of DEAD SLEEP the author decides to try something new with SLEEP NO MORE. This book is not a sequel but a new standalone novel that includes a pair of characters from THE QUIET GAME. Before the story begins the author warns the reader to prepare for a wild ride and he is not kidding. Iles does this by creating a noir novel and placing it in The Twilight Zone. Geologist John Waters is living a somewhat comfortable life. He lives in Natchez, Mississippi, has a successful business and a loving family. The only thing that is troubling him is that his wife is reeling from two previous miscarriages and the Environmental Protection Agency is looking hard at some of the work Waters has done. They are all regular problems that eventually will be solved. His life as he knows it will change one afternoon during his daughter's soccer game. While watching the game he is entranced by Eve Sumner, a young real estate agent working and living at Natchez, who leaves Waters with a sense of deja vu. She sends him a signal only known to him and a former lover named Mallory Candler. What make this even stranger is that Mallory died from a brutal assault and rape that happened in New Orleans ten years ago. What is Eve Sumner's relationship with Mallory? When he finally meets up with Eve he is going to be flabbergasted with what she tells him. She reveals things that only Mallory and Waters could know and once she explains how she knows it will blow his mind. Everything John took for granted is questioned and he becomes so obsessed with Eve that he is willing to give up his family to be with her. It is not until his family is threatened that he starts to put his life together. Things get worse when Eve's body is found strangled in a motel room and all the evidence points out to Waters. He is going to have to prove his innocence while trying to save his family from a clever trap. Iles takes a complete departure from his previous writing style in writing this novel. There is a lot that can be said about this book that will spoil the reader's enjoyment. Suffice it to say, there are some clever twists in this novel that will keep readers guessing. You will want to read this book quickly in order to appreciate its thrills.
Rating: Summary: ...with a touch of Stephen King Review: This was a great book, and much better than I expected. Iles took his time with developing these characters and it was well worth it. Before I go deeper into my review, let me say that I was very excited about seeing Penn Cage again. I really liked him (and Caitlin) and I was happy to see them both! Now, about this book - it was a nice mix of real life and true Stephen King-style fiction. I felt like the "out there" stuff was mixed in well with the "reality" based stuff and there were enough characters on either side of the fence to make the book readable and enjoyable whether you believe Mallory was in other people or not. As for my personal opinion on that - I believe that Mallory was in Eve and practically everyone else by the end. And, while I'm not sure if I believe in that in real life - I bought it in the book - hook, line, and sinker! And, by the way, I really loved the characters in the book - Waters was a great character - complex and interesting. This is a great book. And, if you've never read Greg Iles before, this is an excellent place to start!
Rating: Summary: A Spooky, Strange, and Excellent Thriller Review: Ever since I read The Quiet Game, I've thought that Greg Iles was entitled to much more recognition. He is better than most of the more popular bestselling writers that readers see today. His prose and storytelling are some of the absolute best that I've ever read. After reading the book description for Sleep No More, I was ambivalent about it. I wasn't sure if I liked the idea of reading a thriller involving the soul transfer and its accompanying metaphysics. However, after reading the novel, I can honestly say that I will read anything that Iles chooses to write about. John Waters is a geologist searching for oil in Nanchez, Mississippi. His wife is suffering from depression resulting from the loss of two pregnancies and as a result, the couple's sex life is nearly non-existant. This makes Waters susceptable to the charms of a woman who, at first, reminds him of his former lover, Mallory, who died nine years earlier. He soon comes to realize that this woman is much more than she seems to be and his affair jeopardizes not only his marriage, but the lives of his wife and daughter. As I said earlier, I was uncomfortable at first with the idea of the transference of the soul that is the epicenter of this book. However, these fears were quickly put to rest thanks to Iles ability to weave an intricate, effective story. By the time the book really gets moving, readers will find themselves ready to believe anything that Iles asks them to believe. His characters are well developed and readers will relate to them, especially Cole and Waters himself. If the reader allows some suspension of reality and allows Iles to take them along for the ride, I really can't think of a person who would not love this book for the excellent thriller that it is...
Rating: Summary: Creepy, Suspenseful...A MUST read! Review: John Waters is a man happy with his life. He has a loving wife, a young daughter, a successful business, and all the pleasures he could want living in Mississippi, but underneath this surface is a dark past, a past that has caught up with him. Many years earlier John was in a relationship with Mallory Candler, a relationship that started off good, but quickly turned to obsession. John barely escaped the relationship with his sanity still intact, and soon after he met Lily. Mallory disappeared soon after John married Lily, and shortly after that John found out she was killed in New Orleans. Now, many years later a woman has entered his life, one that hides many secrets from the past. Eve Sumner enters John's life and within seconds she is mouthing words that John has long forgotten, and after their face to face meeting John realizes Eve has a connection to his past, but before he can find the connection a brutal act of violence will pull him into a maze of lies, love, friendship, and the realization of how far someone will go when passion turns to obsession. 'Sleep No More' will definitely have you lose sleep turning the pages to discover the outcome in it's twisted plot. The first fifty pages start slow, but chapter five exposes the books first shock, and then it hurtles forward with twists and turns, more shocks, and more plot twists. A creepy plot of obsessive love, a shady cast of characters, and the small town setting sets the stage for this UP-ALL-NIGHT page-turner that will have readers wondering if they really know their loved ones. This is one creepy, suspenseful thriller! Greg Iles has been changing his thrillers with each new book, where many authors pick a genre and theme and stick to it, Mr. Iles changes them, successfully! There's no doubt that 'Sleep No More' is headed for the top of the bestseller lists, and it's my pick for top-notch beach reading. A MUST read! Nick Gonnella
