Rating: Summary: a wonderful, exquisite book Review: Earlene Fowler has done it again. She has written a suspense filled mystery with family problems, mayhem and humor thrown in. In this one, Gabes's son comes back to see his father. Family strife results. Benni's Gramma Dove's sister, garnet comes from Arkansas and all heck breaks loose, though it's sidesplitting at the same time. You will absolutely love it. Vetern fans of her will enjoy this and one who haven't read her yet are in for a wonderful introduction to Mrs. Fowler's work.
Rating: Summary: Excellent READ Review: I began reading Earlene Fowler's books this past February when a friend brought me "Irish Chain" to read while convalescing from a recent surgery. Ms. Fowler's stories have everything I look for: mystery, suspense, humor, and just plain good writing. An added touch is her naming her mysteries after quilts, as well as her mentioning other cultural activities, such as recording oral histories. Ms. Fowler also does not lower herself to using too much foul language, something I believe too many writers resort to.I hope Earlene Fowler keeps cranking the Bennie Harper mysteries out, and thus continues to build Bennie's character, as well as those of her grandmother, Dove, and husband, Gabe.

Rating: Summary: Goose in the Pond Review: I have read 5 of the 8 Benni Harper mysteries. Being a serious quilter, and an avid reader I find books fairly predictable. Ms. Fowler keeps you guessing until the very end!! Ofter the title of the book which relates to a specific quilt block is not revealed until late in the book. She has so captured me that when I was telling my small quilt group about the books they thought I was talking about a real family!! I have ordered all of the remaining books that I have not read, and wish Ms. Fowler could produce one a week to keep me entertained when I am not quilting. Books are ment to help you be part of the story and these do an excellent job at that! It is nice that the characters in the books remain the same and it doesn't seem to matter if you read them out of sequence as she renews the past in a way to refamilirize you and not make you lost, guessing where who all of the people in San Celina or how they are related. Keep up the good work Ms. Fowler and HURRY with another book!

Rating: Summary: Heavy on Quilts & Storytelling; Light on Mystery Review: In this book, Benni Harper, who is recently married to the Chief of Police, Gabe Ortiz, finds the dead body of one of the storytellers from the museum. Since she knows the victim and the suspects she tries to stay out of the investigation, but everyone thinks she knows more than she does. I found the ending quite unsatisfying -- not because of who is revealed as the murderer, but the way in which this is discovered. I also found Gabe's self-righteous macho posturing too much to take. He is at least as much to blame for the problems between him and his son, Sam, as Sam is. How could Sam not be troubled with a father who can't find anything good about him?
Rating: Summary: Another Winner! Review: Once I start to read Earlene Fowler's books, I can't seem to put them down and Goose in the Pond is no exception. Earlene's words flow and I see the story being told. Great book!
Rating: Summary: Benni reluctantly becomes caught up in another homicide Review: San Celina, California used to be a peaceful place, but in the last couple of years, the crimes plaguing big cities have entered the small town. Benni Harper, curator of a local folk's art museum and an artist's co-op, obviously is aware of the rising crime problem since, after a whirlwind courtship, she is the new bride of Gabe Ortiz, the Chief of Police. The pair originally met during a murder investigation and have since worked together on several more cases in spite of Gabe's vehement objections.
...... One day while jogging together, Benni lags behind and soon discovers a woman's corpse. This time Gabe need not admonish her to stay out of the investigation because she personally knows the victim, realizes the suspects are her friends, and wants to remain out of the case. The deceased was a key volunteer in the upcoming story telling festival that Benni was organizing. Benni believes the killer is also an important volunteer. Because of her previous success and her being the police chief's spouse, no one believes that Benni is not privy to information from the investigation. Despite her objections and her own inclinations, the townfolks continually feed her puzzle pieces that eventually lead the "non-participant" straight into the murderer's web. Benni relies on her wits and an inner strength to help her escape her current predicament.
....... The latest work in the Benni Harper mystery series, GOOSE IN THE POND, combines a cozy American who-done-it with a psychological glimpse into the hearts and minds of the two protagonists. Earlene Fowler makes it near impossible not to care about Benni and Gabe, the state of their marriage, and the next development in a well executed story line. This work is a brilliantly crafted romantic suspense that is wrapped inside a tight, illustrious package waiting to be devoured by the reader.
