Rating: Summary: Pass the salt, please Review: I have read all of Davidson's books and this one seems a little bland. Although the characters are as lively as ever, this plot seemed too contrived. The jab at HMOs is certainly more subtle than the heavy-handed anti-domestic violence message. Let's get the Jerk out of the storylines. I'm hoping her new book is better. Still, not a bad summer read if you're just looking for a little escapism.
Rating: Summary: If you like murder stories and cooking this lady is the Best Review: I have read all of Diane Mott Davidson's books. They are an easy read and make you feel like part of the family. Would recommend them all! Watch Out Betty Crocker, the recipes are great! The chocolate comfort cookies will wow you! If you need to plan a dinner menu that is even included.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: I thought the story line was wonderful. I'm glad to see that the JERK got a little taste of his own medicine. Definitely one of my favorites in the Goldy series!
Rating: Summary: An enjoyable mystery with catering sleuth Goldy Schulz. Review: Diane Mott Davidson is back on track with this entry in the Goldy the caterer series. This time Goldy discovers the dead body of her abusive ex-husband's girlfriend. Her ex is also the prime suspect.Goldy must wrestle with her conscience, as she sees an opportunity to finally have the Jerk (her ex-husband) get his comeuppance, and deals with her son's desire to prove his father innocent. Goldy decides to do what she does best, talk to people and try to discover the truth.
Rating: Summary: Light mystery reading & great recipes. Review: A good story to read between other more difficult to follow mysteries. Back-drop of Aspen Meadows brings the story home for me. Lighter side of mystery.
Rating: Summary: Goldy....GET A LIFE outside of that whiny brat of yours! Review: I'm getting pretty tired of whiny, pouty, in-charge-of-it-all Arch....he's becoming quite a chip off the old block....I mean, really, if my ex-husband was beating up on me and breaking into my house, my kids would have a fit! They'd probably kill him...not whine when he landed in jail.... I liked the earlier Goldy books and I was happy when she found a great guy to marry, but, the story line with the Jerk and that bratty kid has worn pretty thin. Goldy needs to realize that catering to every one of Arch's whims does him no service....who will care when he gets into the real world and he moves out or pouts for weeks on end. I won't be reading any more Mott Davidson.
Rating: Summary: This was such a fun read! Review: Grilling Season was the first Goldie book that I'd read. As soon as I finished it, I went to the used bookstore (sorry Amazon) and snatched up all the other Goldie books in stock. (I'm still looking for Cereal Murders and Dying for Chocolate and am excited to see that Mott Davidson has a brand new one out). I must preface by saying that I recognize that the plots are contrived to the point of being sometimes unbelievable and often the who-dunnit is ridiculously lame. BUT the characterization is so much fun; I love Goldie and Tom; I love the preoccupation with food and the recipes; I love the relationship between Goldie and Arch and Marla. The eccentric cast of small town characters reminds me of the Mitford series. Admittedly corny, but I feel that I know Goldie and want to know more about her past as well as what happens next!
Rating: Summary: Blandest Meal in Recent Memory Review: Mott seems to have used every cliche known to the English language in this slow-moving novel. Her use of the word "pittance" to describe her child support was lacking. She would have been better served to say that it was her "reason for living" Now that's sarcasm. As a first and last time reader of Mott, I feel her story line moves slowly, and her ending is anti-climactic. If I had known I would be reading a cookbook, I would have chosen Fanny Farmer.
Rating: Summary: Detective/Caterer solves crime with gourmet flair. Review: While this book was a fun and fast read, as a caterer I would like to know who does the dishes and shops for all of the last minute things that are always needed. The story was interesting and you keep guessing until the end. I can't wait to try the included recipies!
Rating: Summary: Annoying. Review: I find the constant descriptions of food (recipes, what she is currently eating, what she is serving, etc.)both annoying and tedious. I have put the book down several times for this reason. Although I am more than halfway through the book, I find myself wondering if I should bother to finish it.
