Summary: A little confusing
Review: This book revolves around the Renauld family & it deviates from the usual AC novels. First of all, there is another detyective M. Giraud (who, of course, despises Poirot's old-fashioned way of dealing with things) & Hastings falls in love, not with a red-head ;-), but with...ok, i won't spoil it, by telling u who it is. The plot is not a straight-forward one, but one involving many twists & turns. Just when u think you've caught the murderer, there appears another one. On the whole, a good read but not one of her best.

Summary: confusing
Review: This is a great book, but a very confusing one. Poirot is summoned to a house, the sender writes that he fears for his life. Poirot comes, but the man who sent the letter is dead, stabbed in the back. He was found on a golf course near the house, in a partailly dug grave. This is a great book!

Summary: C'est magnifique!
Review: This is one of my favorite novels by Agatha Christie. I have read it many times over the years and it never ceases to amaze me. Albeit being a superb story, it is an enjoyable book. Very charming and full both of French and English flair. The "matresse" of novels. Don't pass this one!

Summary: A slice of murder, a dash of romance and Poirot
Review: This is one of the best murder mysteries I have ever read. Hercule Poirot is my favorite detective and Captain Hasting is my favorite side-kick. If you have read a lot of Hercule Poirot books you probably already know who Hastings is going to marry. If not, you find out in this book. I personally am a romantic and this book has romance and murder in one. The plot is very well constructed and you never really know who the murderer is and where he or she will strike next. Even when the murder is revealed or someone claims to be the murderer, it turns out that's not who it really is. Your view of what happened changes with every chapter along with who you think done it. It is a really good book and if you enjoy it I recommend The Big Four, also a Hercule Poirot murder mystery.

Summary: Early Agatha shows many trademark twists
Review: This is the second Poirot - written in 1923. Perhaps because of this early date the book has both extra charm and some rough edges. On the charm front, Poirot is still a developing character and I had the sense that Christie wasn't just delivering a formula character. She also has the flexibility to place the plot in France which is largely a positive (even if all the "M's" get a bit confusing). Hasting is still pretty unpolished. Also some of the plot transitions are choppy.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. It has many twists and turns. Some of them are truely clever and a few are predictible. The title is a tad misleadling. While a body is found in the sandtrap of a golf course, golf has virtually nothing to do with the murder. However, the reader needs to be alert as there are many "links" that will prove important as Poirot sees beyond the obvious to find the truth.

Summary: The return of Poirot and Hastings
Review: This is the second Poirot/Hastings mystery and like MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES, Hastings is the narrator and is again speaking from a future time describing past actions (ala Watson in the Sherlock Holmes stories).

The action begins with Hastings meeting a young woman while on a train traveling through France to England. When they part at Calais Hastings believes he has seen the last of her. Soon after he and Poirot are traveling back to France at the request of a wealthy man who has made an appeal to Poirot. They arrive too late, the man had been murdered hours before. As they attempt to solve this crime another murder is commited, then a blackmail scheme is discovered that involves a twenty year old crime. To further complicate matters a young love triangle comes to light and one of the points seems to be the young lady Hastings had met on the train. In the end Poirot and Hastings prevail with a typical Christie last minute surprise.

This book, Christie's third novel, was published in 1923. The reader must keep the time frame in mind in order to understand some of the motivations of the characters and the limitations in police methods. Even with these constraints the story has held up well, due perhaps to Christie's trademark of equal parts of mystery and character development.

Hastings fans will particularly enjoy this novel because Hastings meets his future wife and begins his connection with South America.

Summary: THe Murder on the Links book review
Review: What more can one ask of an intriguing murder mystery? The plot is very clever and extremely suspenseful. You are kept on the edge of your seat from the minute of the first murder until the very last clue is unraveled. This is a truly epic tale of a brilliant crime and a detective who is hot on the case. But will the great Hercule Poirot uncover the truth before somone else is murdered perhaps even himself?
