Rating: Summary: Yawn. Not worth waking the kitties over. Review: Having never read a "The Cat Who..." before, I picked it up as a light read. I think I will just skip the previous 20 (good God), and any that appear like dead little-kitty-love-presents in the future. Perhaps it's because I don't find small town dynamics at all interesting. Maybe it's because I couldn't care less about "homey" little hobbies like dog-cart racing or knitting. It could also be because my own 2 Siamese have more personality than Ko Ko and Yum Yum (the names alone are enough to give you a hairball). Maybe my undying love for good mysterys (XFiles, The Name of the Rose, etc.) cause me to set higher standards. Whatever the reason, I found this book boring, banal, and poorly written with virtually no plot. I knew it wouldn't be the most intellegent read I have had in awhile, but even without high hopes I was sorely disappointed. I suggest that unless the potential reader is a blue-haired Grandma, with a love of small-town nostalgia (Lake Wobegon-esqe), they should just keep looking. My geriatric cat wouldn't even let me line his litterbox with the pages...
Rating: Summary: The wait is finally over! Review: I've waited so impatiently for Ms. Braun's latest that I pounced on the book and read it in one day. Perhaps after such anticipation, the result was anticlimatic. I don't know. I do know that I came away with a slightly different feeling after reading this one. It seemed a little superficial: Mr. Q seemed detached from the finding of a dead man on his beach and never exhibited any interest in solving the crime. And, of course, the fact that it was left unsolved is puzzling. Also, there was less involvement by KoKo and Yum Yum. Their meals were even off-schedule or sometimes nonexistent!!!!! A big gaff in a Braun book!! Oh, well, maybe "mysteries" should be "mysterious" sometimes! I will be anxiously awaiting Ms. Braun's next issue and hope fervently that there are many more to come. RIGHT ON, MS BRAUN from one NC gal to another!!!!
Rating: Summary: highly enjoyable, can't wait for the next one. Review: Yum Yum and Koko are the greatest.
Rating: Summary: Stars is a Five-Star Review: I enjoyed the new book with its surprise ending -- yet it shouldn't have been a surprise, because Ms. Braun has hinted at the idea in several earlier stories. It's a little different from some previous books, but that adds variety to the setting and the characters. I think Ms. Braun is having some fun! Koko is showing his special powers/intuition in a new way. Qwill's changing his way of thinking, or at least becoming more open to unusual possibilities. It's another enjoyable account of the folks in Moose County, 400 miles north of everywhere, but just across town.
Rating: Summary: A good read but disappointing. Review: Having read all the other "cat" Books by Lillian Jackson Braun with anticipation of the next to come out, I think this book leaves the reader wanting, looking for the "hook" the "grabber" something to pull them into the story. It wasn't there. It left a dead body up in the air..how did it get where it was and who did it ? How about the "aliens" where were they ? I think fans of Ms. Braun Will be disappointed, it seems that she ended the book just to end it because she ran out of ideas. I reccommend "cat" fans buy the book knowing that it isn't as good as the last.
Rating: Summary: Vintage Braun - As Addicting as Chocolate! Review: I've been a big fan of the "Cat Who ... " series every since grabbing one off a drugstore shelf to kill time while serving jury duty. That was "The Cat Who Blew the Whistle". I've since back-tracked through the whole series and like millions of others, wait enthusiastically for the latest installment. "Cat Who Saw Stars is vintage Braun. All the favorites are back, Qwill, Arch, Mildred and Koko, as well as the Booze Hotel and the FOO restaurant. As always, there is also a tutorial for the reader, this time on the intricacies of knitting. My only complaint and maybe I just missed something, is, what did happen to the hitchhiker?
Rating: Summary: Not her best Review: I'm going to be the lone dissenter here and say that this was certainly not one of my favorite Cat Who books. Actually, it was my least favorite by a long whisker. I've read them all, most of them as soon as they come out, and haven't been disappointed until now. I don't think that Ms. Braun developed the plot sufficiently - or even at all. It was as if there were many different ideas in Ms. Braun's head, so she wrote about all of them, but never to enough depth to get the reader interested. It felt like the entire book was the first two chapters. I kept thinking that we would go somewhere eventually, but then the story ended and we hadn't been anywhere. This shall not deter me from reading the next book as soon as it is published. I do hope, however, that Ms. Braun gets back on track.
Rating: Summary: This was the best "Cat Who" in a long time! Review: I just finished reading "The Cat Who Saw Stars". It is ever so much better than the recent "The Cat Who Sang for Birds". Things are always hopping in the land North of Everywhere, but this time the bottom literally falls out of the earth! And Qwill is lead to revise his adamant denial of Visitors. I devoured this one in 2 sittings and would have made it in one if I hadn't had to get up and go to work the next morning! I highly recommend all of Lillian Jackson Braun's books, but this one is especially good!
Rating: Summary: Great Review: Another winner from Koko and Yum-Yum and Qwilleran. A must read for everyone who has enjoyed this series. If you haven't read these yet, start at the beginning and you're in for a treat. This is #21. My problem? I hope it's only another year until the next one.
Rating: Summary: An OK effort, not as good as some of her earlier works Review: I've read all 21 books in the Cat Who series, and found this one to be a bit of a disappointment. I think the "surprise ending" is out of character with the rest of the series, and is kinda stupid. The book is a pleasant enough visit with your favorite Moose County characters, but not much else happens. (Qwilleran doesn't solve anything in this one!) I think Braun is coasting on past successes-- she certainly didn't strain herself on this one.
