Summary: Boring, trite, and boring
Review: I invested two hours in reading this book, and then decided that
life is too short to read anything so bad. The story consists
of endless successions of tactical nuclear explosions. Strangely
enough, these seem to have no side- or after- effects. Just
big booms, which the good guys always survive while the baddies
go up in bubbles. The author has taken the worst cliches of all
previous submarine warfare novels, added flat and unbelievable
characters, and carried on for way, way too many pages. There
are better thrillers out there, don't waste your time.

Summary: Buff raises the bar for the intense sub thriller yet again.
Review: I just finished reading this last night, and all I can say is I am floored. I could not sleep until I finished this, it was just the best thriller I have read in a long time.

This is Joe's second novel following the exploits of the Jeffrey Fuller and the crew of the USS Challenger, and the action is even more gripping than in the first. The conflict is ratcheted up to a whole new level, and the tac nukes fly even more freely.

What a grim conflict, what bold heroes, what great characters.

Joe is the master of near future sub novel, I now measure all others against his work. Tom Clancy eat your heart out. The only downer about this book is waiting until he finishes his next book. I might recommend you read his first book before reading this one, but it should hold up on it's own just fine.

Summary: THUNDER IN THE DEEP
Review: I love Joe Buff's technothriller. His style is fresh and gripping, I couldn't put it down. The story seemed real and believable. I love the way he writes. A must read.

Summary: First book was amazing; this one is better!
Review: I rarely read novels of any kind before Deep Sound Channel, and certainly never a submarine novel, but now that Joe Buff is out there I am thoroughly hooked. This book picks up where the first one left off, and everything about it is even more intense: It's faster paced, with more action, more suspense, and it's more violent, if all that can be believed. There is actually a similarity in the plot, in that in both books, the protagonists have to venture onto dry enemy land to plant a nuke, but it's a lot scarier this time. There's even more character development, and through Jeffrey and Ilse and the rest you really feel emotionally what it's like to be in an all-out war, as much as that's possible by merely reading a book. The depiction of war in its many forms couldn't be more real - it's so vivid it's hard to believe Joe has not spent his whole life on Navy submarines fighting battles. Now that I've read Joe's first 2 books I am especially eager to see what the third one will be like.

Summary: Thunder In The Deep
Review: I read Mr. Buff's first book "Deep Sound Channel" last year, and loved it. "Thunder in the Deep" is even more impressive. The way he developes his characters, you become emotionally involved in their lives and battles. The technical information is very realistic. Another outstanding book by Joe Buff.

Summary: Hate to read, but I had the time, happy I did.
Review: I was at a supermarket looking for a book to eat up some extra hours before I fell asleep. Im not a big one to read war books. I love war movies, but have never been able to finish any war book... until this one. Though the book was incredible I have one complaint: It almost got me into trouble. How? I was so into the book that while I was up working for my neighbors at their ranch (why I had time to kill) I kept disappearing to read another chapter, and another chapter. The book just kept goin, the excitement was always there. Around page 200 I thought the book was gonna wind down, but Joe was able to keep the excitement nonstop for 200 more pages. I was very pleased with this book. Enough so, that Im gonna buy the other 2 right now.

Oh yea, review...
Read it, you wont regret it.

Summary: Riveting and frightening
Review: In the world of the 21st Century where warfare can erupt anywhere and in many different forms, Joe Buff brings a frightening scenario of undersea nuclear warfare to the reader. The book captures you on the first page and rivets you to your seat as the fast-paced story keeps a never-ending river of excitement roaring across the pages. Great characters, outstanding plot, an exciting story of a future we hope never occurs. But, then we never expected 9/11.

Summary: Thunder in the Deep
Review: It was satisfying to read more about the undersea experiences of Jeffrey and Ilse and the crew of the USS Challenger. If you're looking for technical know-how on what it's like to live in a nuclear submarine on a combat mission, you'll find the information in Thunder in the Deep. You'll feel you are part of the mission, whether sitting in the Control room straining to discern what threats are on the other side of the hull, climbing into your rack to catch up on sleep, or travelling in a submersible through the dangerous ocean. The strain of living in claustrophobic quarters results in expected outbursts of emotion, which are resolved by crew members with reactions that are believable. In the midst of explosions and crises and the need for quick decisions, nuanced conversation grounded in reality take place. Joe Buff's ability to depict characters transcends the traditional techno-thriller genre.

P.S. To take issue with a recent critical review, according to what I discovered on the Internet, the heir to the Crown in Germany is currently a law student in Berlin. Also, it has often been the custom over the centuries in Europe for a monarch, on assuming the throne, to change his first name to the name of a previous monarch whom he admires, or to preserve a sense of continuity, whence the name Wilhelm. Besides, it is evident from reading Joe Buff's book that a conspiracy of ultra-nationalists has taken over Germany and brought back the Kaiser as a figurhead.
