Rating: Summary: Simply excellent! Review: There are many bad books by lawyers about lawyers. They are short of a convincing or unusual story, interesting characters, a good build up and a convincing ending: just like a lot of litigation! This book restored my flagging faith in the genre. It was everything so many of the rest are not. My only reservations were (a) the lawyer still had a vestige of idealism after several years in the profession and (b) despite the fact that he had never really met her before she hired him (and was facing an uphill struggle against conviction), he never once asks her for payment of fees in advance. I hope we see a follow up soon.
Rating: Summary: Awesome...A Great First Novel!! Review: This is a very good debut novel. It was really hard to put down. Mr Horn is definitely someone to watch. I've already added him to my "favorite authors" list. All the characters were interesting, especially Frank. He's the type of lawyer you'd want defending you. The investigating procedures were so enlightening. I kept wondering how everything was going to turn out and I was not disappointed. I can't believe some of the negative reviews this novel received. Mr Horn gave you everything you'd want in a legal procedural and more. He's an awesome writer. I hope there are more novels coming featuring Frank O'Conell and company. But for now, I highly recommend this one.
Rating: Summary: Move over, Grisham! Review: This new author has a level of mastery in writing that readers search for. I was delighted at the excitement of his story and the freshness of the storytelling. I highly recommend "In Her Defense" to anyone wanting a fun, suspenseful, romantic, legal thriller that you won't want to put down! A real winner!
Rating: Summary: In Her Defense Review: What a great book- perfect timing because it is a fun summer read! The plot of this book involves and attorney and his client, but unlike other legal thrillers I have read, this book had a very realistic story line. The plot revolves around an attorney who is seperated from his wife, and is defending a woman who is accused of murder. There are lots of plot twists, and I won't spoil the ending, but I couldn't put the book down, and was really sorry to see it end. I only hope there is a sequel out soon! Don''t miss this one--you will love it.
Rating: Summary: Horn's debut effort is superb! Review: What do books by Stuart Woods, John Sandford, Dennis Lehane and a few others have in common? I pre-order all their titles because of their quality of writing. Stephen Horn joins those ranks with In Her Defense. The characters are real, the plot has sufficient twists and turns to make you think you're reading John Le Carre. Given Horn's c.v., you know that he plowed some of his real life experiences into this story. All of it comes together to create a throughly enjoyable read --- save it for a weekend, or the beach. You won't want any interruptions. If any of the previous authors ring a bell with you, I'd liken this effort to Wood's Sante Fe Rules. Now if I could only figure out why Hollywood doesn't make this calibre story into grand theatre!
Rating: Summary: Much Ado About Absolutely NOTHING Review: While driving in my car, I heard a wonderful review about this book on NPR. I was so excited about what was said that I promptly purchased a copy, fully expecting a great read! Just like the movies I see, if the first few minutes have me scratching my head and wondering if the rest will be this bad, my initial reservations were indeed born out. I expected and wanted to be swept into a grand mystery set in Washington, D.C., a city which I enjoyed living in for 3 years. What I found however, was a dismal attempt at writing; the only mystery was, - What were the reviewers thinking when they raved about it? -. No part of any page was compelling, interesting, fascinating or even remotely good. My hopes of spending several hours savoring each page of a terrific book were dashed. For the very first time in my life I returned a book. The salesperson asked me why I was bringing it back - I told her what I've written here. There are three primary reasons that caused me to dislike the book: style (instead of being fast-paced, it was tediously prolonged),character development (there was none) and plot development(it was simply obtuse). What there was of a plot was so stretched out and unbelievable that I didn't care about what happened. Characters were too flimsy, none had any substance; they were un-knowable. Consequantly they were simply names on a page that I cared nothing about. If an author can't elicit feelings for those s/he writes about then readers are left wondering if they mistakenly picked up a book on, say, computers, instead of one about people and their struggles. I am an avid reader, I love discovering an author I haven't yet come upon, who causes me to recommend their work to friends. This book however, was so disappointing that I can only encourage my friends NOT to read it! Unless you want to be bored, don't read this book.
Rating: Summary: Worth reading Review: While this book is not among the top echelon of legal thrillers, I do recommend the book. The characters were likable although some of the plot twists seemed too far fetched. The ending made up for many of the book's short comings. I think Stephen Horn has a promising future as a writer.
