Rating: Summary: shooting at midnight Review: Powerful, and emotionaly charged. For Brigett, this is a test of what freindship real is, and what one is willing to do to keep a promise. For Atticus, a coming to terms and a better understanding of love, hate and the dividing lines between a forgotten past and an uncertian future. Not just a thrill ride, but what one person is willing to do for another.
Rating: Summary: An exceptional introduction to an exceptional writer Review: SHOOTING AT MIDNIGHT represents a rare sort of accomplishment for any writer, even one as good as Greg Rucka. For fans of his earlier novels, this is an excellent addition to his body of work while, for new readers, this fourth book makes an even better introduction to his work than his first, the exceptional KEEPER. Bridgett Logan is a surprising protagonist, and Rucka's decision to change narrators in the middle portion of the book is a gutsy gamble that pays off.
Rating: Summary: Rucka Strikes Gold With Shooting At Midnight Review: This is the 4th, and clearly the best, in a series of books by Rucka surrounding a group of characters employed in the protection business. While the previous books had their moments, 'Shooting At Midnight' is a work of force. Bridget Logan takes center stage from Atticus Kodiak and goes underground in an attempt to clear a junkie friend from a murder conviction. Is she diving into the world of heroin dealing out of loyalty to a friend, or is she using it as an excuse to serve a long standing need. The pages fly by as we, the readers, race to determine the answer. Its dark and nerve racking, but worth every moment. A great read!
Rating: Summary: The best Rucka yet Review: This is the best book by Rucka yet. The action is non-stop, but it is the characters that really make this work. Bridgett Logan is the best character in Rucka's world, and she makes a terrific narrator for this remarkable book.
Rating: Summary: Updated but still familiar private dick tale Review: What a great read! Here is the private eye I'd want solving my case! I loved that the hero was in fact an amazonian heroine, albeit with some terrible weaknesses. I completely identified with the addiction struggles which made me want to read the next page and the next page and the next to find out, holy smokes!, what will become of Bridgett Logan? And talk about a heart throb to swoon for, where are the real Atticus Kodiaks? Whoo boy. Somebody who will respect me AND wait for me but still manages to wear a bunch of earrings and maybe have some serious flaws to keep him human? Wow!I do have some little quibbles, though. The basic plot and the violence are pretty much the same private eye stuff but then this IS a private eye book. The violence, while visceral, was all entirely believable and never gratuitous. Some of the character names were a stretch and made me wince a little. But hey those are small complaints. At first the abrubt switch to the Atticus voice was disruptive and disappointing. But I got used to it, tho I still think I would have enjoyed it more if it had stayed entirely with Bridgett. The ending also seemed to drag a little from the intitial hot pace of the book, just a little too many twists and turns. But still, a good read. I have never read any of Rucka's other books and didn't feel at a loss because of that. I'll have to backtrack now and I'll be looking for more Bridgett Logan books.
Rating: Summary: RUCKA "SHOOTS" AND SCORES - BIG TIME. Review: Wow. That was my reaction upon the completion of this book. I had previously read Rucka's KEEPER, FINDER and SMOKER novels, all starring his terrific bodyguard character, Atticus Kodiak (who is also a major part of this book), and knew that this book starred Atticus' previous girlfriend Bridget. What I didn't know was that within about 50 pages of the book, Rucka would cause my jaw to hit the floor in disbelief, as he takes this previously carefree character and exposes us to her true self, which can be incredibly disturbing and heart-wrenching at times. I have never seen one of the main characters of a writer arsenal go through a more difficult hell, and never has it been so well versed and attention grabbing. This is a truly spectacular book, and one that will expose those of us who are not closely familiar with the many varied hells of addition, to dealing with it head-on. Great stuff and HIGHLY recommended. Go RUCKA! His DC comics BATMAN work is terrific as well!
