Rating: Summary: Entertaining and fast paced... Review: Interesting, gory and good
Rating: Summary: Better than Clive Cussler Review: I have had the good fortune to meet the author, and learned of this book in that manner. Cussler's 'Dirk Pitt' has been having the same adventure over and over again. Brock Garner is much more believable protaganist. I understand that a sequel is already in the works. I cannot wait for its arrival.
Rating: Summary: one heck of a wavy romp Review: "Sea Change" by first-time novelist James Powlik is a great blend of scary science fact and thrilling fictitious adventure. While the story captures the reader's interest in the "usual" way of modern thrillers and mysteries, the plot twists and solutions are never predictable. Very credible and interesting characters, especially compared to its peers in the genre. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down! Review: What a great novel! I loved the combination of science fact and fiction and it was nice to read a story about places I know so well. The writing was absorbing and I found myself reading through the night to find out what happened next. The characters were real and well-written and I can't wait to get my hands on the next installment. Good work Dr. Powlik!
Rating: Summary: Fiction becomes terrifying fact Review: I had just finished SEA CHANGE, thinking of it as a realistic but nonetheless fictitious of what we are doing to our ocean realm. Then I picked up the LA Times and watched as beach after beach was closed down for conditions frighteningly similar to those Powlik describes. Kudos for recognizing what the real threats are in our environment, and not drumming up some fear-du-jour cause.
Rating: Summary: Mr. Powlik rules. Awesome debut. Please give us more! Review: Great story. Great characters. Great science. I want to see the movie, collect all the action figures and play the video game. Go buy this book!
Rating: Summary: A great debut and... Review: A lot of fun. Rather than the typical "oh no, a virus is on the loose" trashy novel, I got an intelligent read with a believable hero, Brock Garner, and a strong woman lead character that was more than just a romantic interest. Powlik writes well - explaining the more scientific aspects of the plot but ensuring the audience doesn't get left behind. Well done for a first time author. Here's hoping that Brock Garner gets turned into a franchise and the next instalment isn't too far behind!
Rating: Summary: Publishers Weekly says Review: At heart this is an expert riff on the classic monster-horror novel ... as swiftly moving as a tsunami ... Powlik invests his adventure with echoes of terror tales past, fiction and nonfiction, from The Blob to The Hot Zone, as well as with authentic science, an affecting romance and a knockout climax. As sure as shark jaws, this thriller will keep readers out of the water and on the beach, reading their eyes out.
Rating: Summary: brilliant debut! when's the sequel? Review: It's not many writers who can blend together believable characters and emotions with a page-turning plot, not to mention the horrors of a real-world monster lifted from the day's headlines. Powlik's "Sea Change" delivers all this and more, with enough content to satisfy those in search of a romance, mystery, adventure, or a science thriller. This book has far more depth (pardon the pun), action, credibility, and humanity than typical so-called thrillers ever deliver. It's bound to attract a very broad readership.
Rating: Summary: A guilty pleasure Review: Given the ample supply of "bioweapons" or "virus" or "genetically-enhanced" thrillers in the book and movie market these days (monster movies in the age of AIDS and cloning?), it's especially delightful to find a book like "Sea Change" from a dynamic new author. The verisimilitude no doubt comes from Powlik's own science background, but in difference to other "experts" who attempt fiction, "Sea Change" offers realistic characters in frightening situations with all the adventure, suspense, and romance that invites. At first glance this was not my kind of book -- if only for the number of disappointing competitors. But undeniably, "Sea Change" hooks the reader sooner or later, pulling him (or, more surprisingly, her) into a breathtaking yarn through to the very last page. Do yourself a favor - this is quintessential "beach reading" without a single guilty calorie.
