Summary: This author really brings the characters and area to life!
Review: A very good western novel. The author really has a talent for painting a picture of the characters and the scenery in your mind. If you like the popular western writers like Louis L'Amour you will enjoy this one!

Summary: hold your horses
Review: After buying this book based on the reviews below and struggling through it I felt that I had to add my two cents before another poor, unsuspecting soul got stuck spending hard earned money for this thing.

I'm not sure when this was actually written, but it reads like the first novel of a high school creative writing student. Let me see: I was dumbfounded by the numbers of cliches, melodramatic gestures that substituted for emotion, cardboard characters, and just plain inept description of action, motivation and scenery that actually made it past a professional editor's desk and into publication.

Do yourself a favor and get to reading some genuinely competent Western witers.

Summary: GOOD WESTERN FICTION!
Review: This is the third novel by Kirby Jonas that I have read and he continues to sparkle. Though, you can tell this was his first novel because the writing is not quite as tight and textured as his later works, the book is head and shoulders above other western authors.

As the title suggests, the book has a sequel, which I am currently reading. Actually, I brought "Seasons End" (Part 2) over eight months ago and put it aside until I find this book, which proved to be difficult.

While Kirby Jonas style of writing reminds the reader of other western authors, he adds several layers to his writing which provides a rich textured story that involves you with the characters and provides a story that is not the typical simple plot used by most authors. He is the writer that Louis L'Amour wanted to be and I do not mean that comment as a knock on L'Amour because I have read nearly every book that he wrote and thought they were excellent. Jonas is simply a better writer.

This is an excellent book and anyone interested in the American West in the late 19th century will enjoy the writing of Kirby Jonas.

Summary: A FIVE STAR BOOK
Review: This outstanding western fiction held my attention from beginning to end. I could not put it down. Actually, I have read the book seven times and find it more interesting each time. This is because Kirby Jonas is not an ordinary author. In my estimation he is today's Finest Western Fiction writer, a title I could not afford to give out easily. But there is no author his equal: his content, intensity, focus, efficiency of words, use of vocabulary, command of the language, powerful control of the progression of the story. Kirby has it all; he is the only author I could give an A+ to without any reservations. If Kirby continues writing like this he will become standard reading in many of our curricula across the country. We owe Kirby a debt of gratitude for finally letting us know what true Western Fiction writing should be. He is now becoming a legend, especially in light of the additional books he has subsequently written. Season of the Vigilante should be read by everyone. Thanks, Kirby, for your Five Star Gift!
