Summary: Thorfinn and Macbeth
Review: This is surely a great book about Scotland and the Orkney Islands in the 11th century. But I must say that one should not confuse fiction with reality, because Dunnett mixes Thorfinn and Macbeth. Ok, she succeeds in giving a good impression of Macbeth who wasn't the bad guy after all. There is no evidence that these two go to gether in real history. They were related in a way, not only because Malcolm III married his daughter Ingibjorg. But it is to be doubted that Thorfinn should have died in Lumphanan, where the real Macbeth drew his last breath. I say this because it is known today that Thorfinn and Malcolm III made a treaty in 1059. Nevertheless, read the book and then decide for yourself.
