Rating: Summary: A new look at authentic mexico - with a murderous twist Review: A fun mystery based in an authenic Mexican setting: not the typical mystery novel. Definitely worth reading if you're interested in Mexican culture or simply want a good book to dive into!
Rating: Summary: A Day in the Heart of Mexico Review: Hallock's amiable tale of suspense takes the reader behind the scenes at a guest house deep in the heart of Mexico. The plot is somewhat transparent, and the references to the protagonist's dead husband are overdone, but the novel does give a sense of life in Oaxaca. These daily life depictions are the strongest parts of the book. The novel might be of more interest to older readers or readers with a special interest in Spanish and/or Mexico.
Rating: Summary: A Cultural Whammy Review: I was delighted and entertained by this light, yet culturally packed book. Quite provocative. Ms Hallock takes you on a ride that includes interesting characters who must deal in a world in which the help they should be able to count on, is as dangerous as the horrible situation which presents itself. Thus, these foks are forced to use their own wits and rely on one another. It is obvious that Ms Hallock understands the Zapotec people. Their lives are much different from the more classical Mexican population, much more impoverished. But they are just as proud and insistant upon making a good life for themselves and their children, even when faced with murder and mayham. The book has mystery, fun, and for me a facinating insight into a part of the world and a people, who, in dealing with life "in the raw," show humor and ingenuity. They taught me much and set me to thinking of how I would have responded under the same circumstances. The main character is an American woman, kind but determined, snappy but introspective. I look forward to her, and her compatriot's, next adventure!
Rating: Summary: A Lyrical View of the Zapotec Indians Review: Mary Hallock's simple, elegant prose takes the reader deep inside the lives of Mexico's Zapotec Indians. A south-of-the-border Tony Hillerman.

Rating: Summary: A Cultural Whammy Review: One of the best books I have read in 2002. The imagination of the writer captivates the reader into thinking they are actually a guest at the Casa Colonial. I could not stop turning the pages.I found myself having a deep down hardy laugh and then sometimes sitting on the edge of my seat conserned if I would be getting out of the situations the characters get involved in. I have recommended this to all my friends and strangers too. I am anxiously waiting for another spellbound book from this author.
Rating: Summary: For something new and entertaining Review: Suspenseful, entertaining, and rich, this book paints a vivid picture of Oaxacan culture while humorously cracking the case of a Mexican murder. My husband doesn't care for mysteries but was delightfully surprised over this book which says a lot! Definitely a book to consider for a book club.
Rating: Summary: Great fun to read. Review: The Dog on the Roof is fun easy reading. Ms. Hallock's way with words is not only humorous but also allows you to feel as though you really know the characters. Dona Milly is such a delightful woman, that one just wants to know her and hear more about her life in Oaxaca. Perhaps even visit the Casa Colonial. How about a tour Mary? Can't wait to read the next adventure.
Rating: Summary: Oaxacan Fare Review: The Dog on the Roof made me want reservations for a stay at Casa Colonial. I'll just have to wait for Ghost of a Gringo. The characters have a distinct vitality, the settings are an almost visceral part of the story, and readers come away with a feeling for what is good about humanity. A humorous caring book by an eminently caring author.
Rating: Summary: A great read! Review: This is a great book to read while you curl up with a cup of tea or hot chocolate. The setting is fascinating, the characters enjoyable, and the plot and writing attention grabbing. I highly recommend it. The solution to the mystery is as satisfying as the writing.
