Rating: Summary: Very deceptive chapter inclusion Review: (Recently I had read Karen Robard's "Forbidden Love" and was drawn into reading another romance. Ms. Robard's novel was beautifully written and erotic, and her descriptions of the protagonists' taboo attraction towards each other was startlingly realistic...)
I have not read a Linda Howard's book before. However, based on readers' opinions and the chapter inclusion by Amazon, I had purchased this book. The inclusion by Amazon had made Ms. Howard's story sound fascinating, scintillating, and eerily mysterious. Upon my reading of the first novella within this 3-novella book, however, I was extraordinarily disappointed. The writing lacked sophistication, and the plot did not make logical sense. Even within the realm of fantasy, the characters and their perceptions were not believable and rather silly. I do not believe I will read another novel by Ms. Howard again.
Rating: Summary: Read at least the first story!!! Review: All three were very good stories, but my favorite has to be Lake of Dreams. They were soul mates from the begining. I thought it was a very beautiful love story.
The other two were alright. The rating is mostly for the first story.
Enjoy on a lazy afternoon or rainy night.
Rating: Summary: Linda Howard is the Queen! Review: I have read and loved almost all of Linda Howard's books! She is a master story-teller...Her stories just unravel beautifully, but they're fast-paced too, and the sensuality and emotion is always high. STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT was no different! It was a collection of short stories, each one chock-full of passionate love. She is the master! WHITE OUT was my favorite story in this book, but they're all intriguing from the first page. Highly recommend!
Rating: Summary: If you haven't already read them, three great novellas Review: I was more than a little disappointed when I opened this book and realized I'd bought it without knowing that it was a compilation of three of Howard's previously released novellas, each of which I already own. I'll accept some mea culpa here, but it's annoying to have a book hyped as a "new" release when there's nothing "new" about it. Fortunately, these are three of my favorite works by Howard, and it's nice to have them together in a hardback edition. Howard is a master at adapting the novella format to contemporary romance. Her focus is almost exclusively on the characters and instantly building a sharp sexual tension between them. In each of these stories, the characters meet for the first time and circumstances allow them to skip most of the subtleties of courtship and move straight into steamy and intense relationships. "Lake of Dreams" is the first work I ever read by Howard, and ever since she's been one of my favorite authors. "Blue Moon" and "White Out" are even better. If you like contemporary romance - and you don't already own these stories - "Strangers in the Night" is an essential addition to your library.
Rating: Summary: For those that like to be manhandled on occasion: Review: More than a few people where offended by the third story. However, I am not one of those people... I thought the stories where very entertaining and I tell you once I picked the book up I didn't put it down until I was finished. Which was about 3 hours later. The first and third stories were very good the second was just ok. Keep them coming Linda...
Rating: Summary: Enjoy a little fantasy in these 3 stories Review: Reprints or not...these are fictional accounts of LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT with strangers. And they are wonderful...strange for the real world. But great stories.
Rating: Summary: Mediocre..... Review: These stories have appeared elsewhere but I had never seen them before so I was happy to read them. Linda should stick to full length novels as opposed to short stories. She is best at developing characters in novels rather than stories. These were ok...not great. The best story was the one about the couple who is repeatedly reincarnated and finally end up together. Very poignant and touching. I have re-read it about 5 times so far.
Rating: Summary: Not quite up to Ms. Howard's usually quality Review: These three short stories are great little stories. However, they aren't of the supreme quality that I have come to expect from Ms. Howard. I would still recommend them because they are better than half the romances out there, but they seem disappointing when compared with "Shades of Twilight" and "Mr. Perfect."
Rating: Summary: My introduction to "romantic suspense" Review: This book got me started reading Linda Howard's other books as well as other great "romantic suspense" authors. The three stories in "Strangers in the Night" are all excellent, although "Lake of Dreams" is my personal favorite--the ending is perfect. In "White Out" the suspense is almost too much to bear . . .
Rating: Summary: 3 Stories to Warm your Heart Review: Three stories that will make you sigh, smile and even sniffle. 'Lake of Dreams' is about two lovers sperated by time and space too many times and must make things right this last time Fate has given them. Can these two ill-fated soulmates make it right this time? Or will distrust built up throughout the centuries cloud everything again... I gave this one 4.5 stars.(characters were well plotted and developed and I was pulled right into their struggle with Fate and found myself nearly crying) 'Blue Moon' is a tale about a strange woman living alone in the bayous and the new big city sheriff trying to solve a murder mystery and how she is connected to it. Is she the next victim? Or suspect... I gave this one 4 stars(too short to get involved in the characters lives) 'White Out' is about an Idaho blizzard that strands a young widow at her resort with no help when a stranger shows up at her door with blood stains on his clothes. Is he the escaped convict the cops are looking for? Or help in disguise... I gave this one 4 stars.(The characters could not be developed enough to make this one fascinating, yet it was a typical Howard story where she made it very compelling and different) All in all, they lacked in-depth character development unlike her other novels, yet they kept intact the usual flair she has with words and were page-turners. Worth the read. Tracy Talley ~@
