Rating: Summary: Gripping in a Manner Review: Though I'm usually a romance or fantasy reader, I was sent this book and I decided to give it a try. I'm not sure if I'm glad that I read this book because in many ways, the story and the abject hopelessness that these children seemed to experience was horrific; however, I knew as I read it that it was a book worth the effort to read (regarding how painful the main character's life seemed), which I can rarely say for books that seemed enjoyable at the time. All of the characters were well-drawn and terrible in their own manners, besides the main character. Perhaps because it was told from her point of view, I was able to give her more leeway, but though a large point of her story deals with her brother, I felt no pity nor sympathy for him. The way they all seemed to ignore this girl's need for family or support just wore on me as I read it. As some others have said, this was not a suspense to me. Things were, if not obvious, not surprising in the manner which they occurred. However, this made the telling more believable in a way. I solidly give this book four stars and I'm glad that I took the time to try something different even if I wasn't sure if I was exactly glad to have read the book. I do recommend reading it even if this is not normally the type of book you would consider because it is a fast read that broadened my reading horizons.
