Rating: Summary: The Piper's Sons Review: For a debut novel, I suppose it's not too bad -- we all have to start somewhere! The story was good for the first thirty pages, but then completely falls apart as the main character makes a series of foolish and unbelievable errors (not notifying the police after an attempted abduction is simply one example). Although it's billed as a suspense novel and a thriller, it actually turns out to be neither as the main character's history is developed and we discover that his family has met with a series of preposterous events (I won't divulge what actually happens to them, but suffice it to say that I was alternately rolling my eyes and laughing out loud!). The villain is completely over the top -- and obviously omnipotent in order to accomplish everything he could possibly have done in his lifetime. Any chapters involving The Cage are simply too ridiculous and over-the-top evil to mention.Aside from the character development, the writing style is okay...the alternating chapters between the Sinclair's and the Cage did nothing but stress exactly how ridiculous the villain was -- in fact, I cringed whenever I turned the page to find the italicized writing! Also, entirely too much time was spent on needless description, causing me to skip entire pages in order to move the story forward. Despite skipping these sections, it was an effort to finish this book. Perhaps his next one will be better, but I'm not willing to invest the money to buy it!
Rating: Summary: A Turkey! Review: I give this book five stars because YES it was a thrill, YES it was a mystery, YES, it kept me reading until the last page. However, I'm tempted to deconstruct the whole thing for you, and for myself, to prove that The Piper's Sons wasn't really THAT fantastic and that I'm just an easy-to-please gal, that it doesn't take a whopping classic to make me smile. I'm just a victim of pop culture and the low-brow standards that have become staples in every library in North America. However that may be, I would tell people seeking a good thrill to read this book - it delivers.
Rating: Summary: The Piper's Sons Review: If the movie gods are paying attention, this twisted psychological thriller will soon be at a theater near you. Fergusson is masterful at eliciting rich visuals from the printed word in a style best described as literary while weaving a sinuous story that draws you deep into the dank recesses of the perverse human psyche. I was as lured in and trapped by the writing in this novel as Bobby Cage was in the horrifying cage sequences. Fergusson snags you on the very first page and takes you on the convoluted psychological journey of two characters, each undergoing their own metamorphosis, a fascinating process to witness, and one so far from ordinary experience that it is freakishly captivating. I understand that this novel is Fergusson's debut in suspense. Extraordinary. I can't wait for his next one. And the next.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Put It Down! Review: If you like suspense you will love this book. I read it in a day - couldn't put it down. If you are like me and can usually guess where the story is headed you won't have that problem here. Great twists and turns with enough to keep you wanting more but not so crazy that you feel like you've been tricked. If you live in Washington, or ever have, you will enjoy all of the geographical references. I'm not sure someone who has never lived in the area would get all of the references but that wouldn't hurt their enjoyment of the story - just more fun for those that do understand the link between coal and Newcastle, etc. The fight scene was a little much - too Jean Claude Van Dame for my tastes. It felt like it was written with the movie rights in mind. Maybe men feel differently - I 'll ask my husband when he is finished. He never reads my "mysteries" but he hasn't put this one down since I finished. Can't wait for the next book by this author.
Rating: Summary: Skeletons in the Closet Review: In this brooding thriller, Seattle carpenter Paul Sinclair is haunted by a series of tragedies, and is confronted by his family's secret--a legacy of evil that is closing in on him, his wife and their young son. You'll be thinking about the intricate plot twists of this story after you read the last page. As someone always on the lookout for new authors, I must say that Fergusson has written an interesting page-turner, and has laid the foundation for a successful writing career.
