Rating: Summary: Excellant Review: i beleive that this book is the bet yet ecause it contains a great deal of action and the fact that teh government is spurns him for doing it's dirty work and the fact that some of his own family spurns him makes him just about all alone and thatis what i like
Rating: Summary: Kovak slips into your mental fantasy of dangerous adventure Review: I have read all of Johnstone's "ashes" series, several of his adventure books, and two of his horror stories. "The Last of the Dog Team" is his best effort. This was an engrossing, hard to put down book. My only complaint was that it should have been longer. While I do enjoy the "ashes" books for light reading, in all honesty, they fall short in character believability and plot development. "Dog Team" is a more serious work with good characters, an intestesting plot, and a logical flow. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it wholeheartedly. I hope Mr. Johnstone writes more like this... perhaps a sequal for the special ending
Rating: Summary: My Thoughts.... of the Dog Team Review: I liked this book... and being that I'm in the Marines I liked the fighting aspect of the story, being a red-blooded american man, I also liked some of the intimated writing... lol But the one thing that kept me reading this story, was that everyone that read it (including myself) in some shape or form could relate to it... if not in actual experience, then in some kind of desire to do what Terry did... but thats just my opinion... have a nice day....
Rating: Summary: Good book Review: I thought it was a great book and Terry does another superb job of drawing in the reader for a different type of story.
Mr. Johnstone does a super job in describing and story telling. And leaves some to the imanigation of the reader. He had an excellent grasp of military jargon.
In the end Terry K. wasn't invicible contrary to belief. I think most readers were disappointed at the end but none can say that is wasn't an exciting read. As they obviously finished it. :-)
Rating: Summary: ONLY FAIR--IN MY OPENION Review: The story is about Terry Kovak and his life from about fifteen on. Shows him as a young man and what he becomes. He is part of the Dog Team. This is a secret group that is part of the military. Terry is a trained killer, guns, knives, hands, you name it and he can kill with it. This is his life as he goes to many different countries doing his job. It is a sad book to me as he is lost for ever from his family, he becomes to hard for them. He is for ever lonely and by him self. I feel like to much of the book was written about his many, many affairs with women everywhere. Very detail and several pages devoted to that. In fact I guess over half the book was about his lust life. Would have liked it better if more written about the fighting.
Rating: Summary: A good paced book. Review: This book is one of the best. I like to think of myself as a well read person. This book starts off with a good start and it just gets better from there. The main character Terry is a troubled youth who finds his life in the way of a goverment killer. They train him and shape him to "their" way. This book starts off in the 1950's and it goes through Terry's life. I thought this book to be one of the best Johnstone has written and I hope that their is a sequal made.
Rating: Summary: A compelling character, with not a lot to do Review: This is the only Johnstone book I have read, and I am sorry to say I was not especially impressed.Terry Kovac was an interesting character, but there seemed to be very little actual plot to the book, it was more like a series of recollections. Terry seems to find himself in similar situations over and over again (wooing and leaving women, letting his temper get him in trouble). But the book was sorely lacking in action, at least from the perspective of someone who reads a lot of action thrillers. I am willing to keep an open mind if someone has a recomendation for another one of his novels. I enjoyed the entire premise, and the characters were well drawn.. I just wish they had more to do.
Rating: Summary: I agree with not alot to do Review: This was the first Johnstone book I read and I can say one thing, the book was intriguing enough that I could not put it down. I read it within a 24 hour period. Though I agree that I could not really clearly identify a plot (if there was one). The constant wooing and losing of women got old. Great that he is a stud but enough of his problems with intimacy. Great premise for a story but not enough development to the full range of characters and plot. Again it was a good read but I hope he has better stuff.
Rating: Summary: This is a sad case where sex replaces adventure. Review: This was to be a story of an extremely dangerous man trained by the military to be a super Green Beret. From the jacket you figured this would be one hell of an adventure in line with Barry Sadler, but alas no. The book is continually interupted by the sexual exploits of a young man that the women just can't keep their hands off of. Very few adventures are ever embarked on , but the book does allude to Terry going on missions and serving in various roles of combat earning every medal of valor, including the Medal of Honor. Never did read how he won it. He was the soul survivor of an attack in Vietnam, but never read how he got there. This is a sad attempt by a talented writer to write a book of "love" and adventure and he misses the mark on both scores. If this had been the first book I read by this author I would have never bought another book by him and would hve missed out on several fine series. Where his agent was is a mystery but they both need to trash this book before it loses him anymore readers.
