Description:
"If it has anything to do with the war, I don't want to hear it," says Capt. Tom Maynard, trying to stop a flood of saloon reminiscences. To which his companion replies, "Maynard, right now if you eliminate the war from honest discourse the country will fall silent." It's five years after the end of the Civil War, and Capt. Maynard is in the Montana Territory town of Baddock to track down a heroic Union officer who was supposedly killed in action but who seems to have resurfaced as a murderer. Maynard--who made an impressive debut in The Sword of General Englund--is even more interesting this time around. He is a man scarred and compromised by his own wartime experiences but trying hard to hold himself together, as is the country.
