Review: Fly with Betty La Pierre to a secluded lake setting and meet her charismatic hero Hawkman. A retired intelligence operative, he's still in the line of fire. And Jennifer, his new romantic interest, insists on sharing his dangerous company. This story will enthrall you up to its climactic end. Can't wait to read the future sequels emerging from Ms. La Pierre's IMac!

Review: Hi Betty, I finished "The Enemy Stalks" and enjoyed it very much. I think a series with Hawkman is a great idea. I could relate to some of the places you referred to in the book; Oklahoma City and Medford, Or. Copco Lake may become a popular place to visit after people read "The Enemy Stalks". I must say I will have to stop by that lake if I am in that area. You did a great job bringing the various characters into play. You made them come alive. I must say it was hard to take a break from reading your book. I found it very interesting and full of suspense. I'm sure my wife will have a few comments after she finishes. You did a great job and looking forward to the next book. Sincerely, Ken P. Sun City, AZ

Summary: A Real Mouse Clicker
Review: I really enjoyed reading this nifty spy vs. romantic spy fable set in the Pacific Northwest. It affirms once again, that love is blind. The Enemy Stalks focuses on Jennifer, a single woman living by herself in a sparsely settled lakeside community who becomes attracted to her neighbor, a bearded man with an eyepatch. The locals call him Hawkman because of his hobby with predatory birds. Jennifer and Hawkman live directly across a lake from each other along a narrow stretch of water. The distance between them is close enough for each of them to easily observe the other. Things can get a bit dull in the woods even with a satellite dish. She likes dogs and he keeps falcons for hunting. They both like pets. She feels a kinship.

Early on, the eccentric loner admits to her that he is obsessed with getting revenge for the killing of his late wife and that he has sworn to murder the perpetrator. He also warns her that she herself is in mortal danger just by being close to him. In the first chapter she finds him in his home lying in a pool of blood, the wounded target of a gunman. The assassin lies dead of gunshot wounds in the yard. This is not discouraging to the determined Jennifer.

As the plot thickens, "The Agency" becomes involved. Unmarked helicopters circle overhead and Jennifer receives phone calls warning her of rape and mutilation if she continues to associate with Hawkman. She can't tear herself away from him. She becomes Hawkman's willing partner in his plans for revenge. Although she had never liked having guns around the house, Hawkman gives her a gun and the courage to use it. He teaches her marksmanship just in time to help him kill two Iranian hit men.

The story has a nasty sneering villain who hisses and snickers when he speaks. Dogs bite him. He's so mean that even birds peck him.

This novel on cassette is a real mouse clicker and the strongest reason yet for investing in a palm pilot.

Review: I thought that this was one of the more original mystery plots that I have read. She nailed how to keep someone's interest and force them to read faster to see what happened at the end.

Summary: The Enemy Stalks - an exciting opening to the Hawkman Series
Review: If you're looking for an exciting story with an interesting plot, very appealing characters, and lots of action, Betty Sullivan LaPierre's new "Hawkman" series might be just what you're looking for. The first book, THE ENEMY STALKS, is the story of Hawkman, a former government agent forced into retirement by a disastrous mission which left him with sight in only one eye. Now, with a new identity, he is haunted by the knowledge that the Agency mole that destroyed not only his career but also his wife is still at large and still a threat. He has no idea just how potent that threat is until his shadowy past violently intrudes into his life. Hawkman's past also threatens Hawkman's friend and neighbor Jennifer Morgan.

From the time that a stranger tries to kill Hawkman until the end of the book, there's plenty of action, adventure, twists and turns. The threats escalate from phone calls and prowlers to bombs and night crawling assassins. It is a pleasure watching Jennifer grow and change during the course of the book. Although admittedly intrigued by Hawkman, she harbors some doubts about him and his past. She has trouble accepting that violence and danger have not only entered her life, but now threaten it. As the book goes on, she realizes that she must confront this danger with a strength she never knew she had. Jennifer and Hawkman must also confront the fact that, unexpectedly, they are very attracted to each other. Both still hurting from the deaths of their spouses, they come to realize that their relationship is very important to them.

LaPierre has crafted a credible, swiftly moving story. She lulls you into a false sense of security with lovely scenes set in the northern California mountain country, then whisks that security away with breathless chases and deadly gunfire. As soon as one question is answered another one pops up to push the action along even more. Who is after Hawkman and why he's being targeted are only part of the puzzle.

Woven throughout the book is LaPierre's obvious love of the outdoors. Her descriptions of Copco Lake are lush and inviting: she makes you want to take off down one of the deserted trails and hike into the mountains. You can sense Hawkman's bond with the injured birds that he cares for as well as his satisfaction in being able to release them again. Equally engaging are the characters that LaPierre has created. They're real and interesting - people you'd like to meet, or have as your neighbors.

I look forward to the next book in the "Hawkman" series - I have to admit that this one was hard to walk away from. It really drew me in and made me care. I hope that we get a better understanding of Hawkman in future installments, a deeper look into his character and his thoughts.

Summary: The Enemy Stalks
Review: In her debut book, Ms St.Pierre introduces a fascinating detective known as Hawkman. Hawkman is a former Agency operative who is hiding away under an assumed identity. Jennifer Morgan, a young widow, is the equally fascinating heroine who lives across the lake. A woman who knows her own mind and refuses to back off from danger, she is Hawkman's equal for courage. If you like intricate plotting, this is a mystery/suspense book you will truly enjoy. THE ENEMY STALKS takes place in a secluded lakeside community in the Northwest where even the eccentric secondary characters have unique appeal. The first of a series with the second book already released, St. Pierre's Hawkman books are must reads.

Summary: Good, clean Mystery!
Review: Jennifer felt Hawkman's body move in the direction of the passing helicopter. When the sound of the popping blades finally died in the distance, he stepped away and yanked the orange cap from beneath his shirt, slapping it against his thigh. "It's gone." He plopped the hat onto his head and walked briskly toward the truck as if nothing had happened. What the hell is going on? She wondered, running after him. She grabbed his arm. "Wait! Why did you shove me against that tree?" He kept walking. "Caution. I don't know who's looking for me, but he could have access to a helicopter." She dropped her hand and stared at his back in shocked silence. This whole thing sounded big-time: helicopters and men with guns who didn't care who got hurt. Fear ballooned inside her.

Thus begins the Hawkman series. Ex-Agent Jim Anderson, new identity Tom Casey, relocates to Copco Lake, a remote community in Southern Oregon, to start fresh following an injury that forced his early retirement. Sporting a pirate-like eye patch, a beard and long hair, Casey has recently gained the nickname Hawkman due to his affection for hurt and wayward birds. Content to start a quiet existence as a small-town private eye, he settles into his cabin on the lake, fascinated by Jennifer Morgan, a widow living on the adjacent shore. As their relationship warms, other forces are heating up in a sinister and relentless plot of revenge against Hawkman.

When Agent Jim Anderson had lost his wife to a car bomb meant for him, he embarked upon a very personal vendetta against the killers, eliminating all but one, the leader. That man now stalks Hawkman and anyone he cares for.

With his fondness for Jennifer growing, along with his sense of the danger she's in due to her association with him, he attempts to convince her to leave, trying to remove her from harm's way. But Jennifer is embroiled in an adoption of young Sam and fears being gone at this point may jeopardize its success. Hawkman, frustrated at her stubbornness, decides a crash course in pistol shooting is their best alternative and may just save their lives. During a series of target practices and hawk hunting expeditions, their passion for each other blossoms. There is much danger surrounding the couple. Even an everyday chore, like walking to the mailbox, sets the heart hammering with fear. Staying one step ahead of the assassins is a harrowing experience, for the reader as well as for Hawkman and Jennifer. You'll find yourself wrapped around this cozy mystery with the doors securely locked and an occasional glance over your shoulder.

Ms. LaPierre has written four books, all in the genre of Mystery and Suspense. She thoroughly enjoys the challenge of plotting a good, clean story.
