Rating: Summary: The Chronicles of Cain by Ken Branscum Review: The story starts in modern day Egypt, with an ordinary man who has an extraordinary past he does not even know of. He uncovers a tomb belonging to a being of such power that he is shown the past, the truth of the present and given a glimpse of the future.
The characters are deep and gripping. As a woman I could identify with the beauty and the power of the women, and could feel the loss of their reign of power. I also appreciated the power rising from the males, and their struggle to break the hold of the priestess that rules them.
Personally I fell in love with three of the main characters; Joli a young priestess that is highly revered for the power she can summon and for her connection to the great goddess Isis, Schilo an old priest who is the most powerful of the followers of the great god Set, and Zu, who is the twin to Schilo's heir, and his protector. In these three I felt a connection and for a time I was able to be so lost in them it was like it was me that was enduring their trials and triumphs.
Reading this book is like stepping into the past and realizing how much it oddly reflects our present, and shows that all too often we do not learn from our mistakes, we just make them bigger.
The beginning of the book is rich in character development and sets the mood and scene for the rest of the book. It is well worth reading the first half carefully so that you get the entire feeling for the rest of the book.
I have but one complaint about the whole book, and that is the ending. Even knowing there was a second book, the ending is a cliffhanger of dynamic proportions. I eagerly await the sequel and intend to read it from cover to cover the first day I can get my hands on it.
Rating: Summary: The Chronicles of Cain: Beginnings Book One Review: WOW! The Chronicles of Cain effectivily told the story of one man's view of how religion and mythology are forever intertwined, and though I have never been one to enjoy books containing either subject, this book has definitely changed my mind. The way that Ken Branscum has taken non-fiction material and interwoven it into a fictional adventure is great! It has everything that I expect to find in a story: easy to read, though complex enough to keep my attention; believabe without being mundane; it really made me think while it entertained me. I recommend this book to all.
