Rating: Summary: When is Bob Davé's next book published? Review: "Run To The Sun" is an outstanding novel not just because it is Bob Davé's first publication or because of the detailed characterisation, not even perhaps because it was the first time I had bought a book through Amazon.com! Part of the immense appeal of this novel is the unusual but invigorating, easy transition between different genre. Davé uses an intelligent combination of professional experience, engaging imagination and a broad spectrum of crushing personal regret, cynicism, indefatigable belief in human nature and deep and abiding love to draw the reader along in this exciting tale. It is not only the 'broad brush' adventure yarn which weaves a tale of intrigue and suspense but an eye for detail and clarity of appropriate expression which provides something for everyone. The descriptions of automobile travel with young children come from a man whose love for children is clearly profound but squabble-stoppingly realistic. The courtroom scenes which, if they don't come from acute personal experience certainly resonated with an anguish which is recognisable across the English speaking world and, I'm sure, much wider. For the technically minded there is at least more than a passing hint of "Mission Impossible" and yet, when the reader pauses for breath, we are taken swiftly but skilfully through the psychology of dreams and a plausible description of the rather surreal notions of genetic transference. No sooner is that added to the brew than one is immediately flipped into an historical tale which culminate in horrific modern-day implications. Formulaic this is not! Whatever the readers' preference for type, this exceptional novel is created with skill and with love. Even if some readers anticipate that the genre shift may not be to their taste, I implore you read on to a conclusion which is as breathtaking as it is humane and as crafty as it is well crafted. For those who think that they can shortcut to a twist in the tale that'll make you gasp and tingle, forget it! If you don't have the staying power to reach the conclusion your lack of imagination probably means that you are already very sad and that such sophistication may well be wasted on you. The sheer "rightness" of the conclusion makes the journey worthwhile, but, just like any sensible traveller, take time to savour the journey and lose yourself in this imaginative plot. Like all good journeys' it broadens the mind, refreshes the soul and despite leaving one with a tinge of sadness that the journey is concluded, eager for the next episode! When is Bob Davé's next book published?
Rating: Summary: Run to the Sun Review: ...thank goddess I was totally wrong! I work in a 24-hour office, usually on a very slow night shift, so I read a lot of books to pass the time. I've devoured dozens of books in the past year, some good and some frankly reeking. I've read books by first time authors and although I try really hard to find something good to see in their work, I usually don't see a degree of absolute perfection and tightness in freshman efforts such as this one. I about laughed out loud when he describes the workplace of the hero, seeing as I work across the street from that building! So as you see, I'm familiar with his Honolulu setting, which is impeccable. I've also read lots of suspense and thriller novels. I would read Dave` before I read Koontz or King, hands down. The pace is quite fast, and best of all the dialogue is not only believable, it's so hilarious I had to reassure my bewildered coworker (who had not read it yet) that I wasn't going totally insane. Multiple times I had to do that, really. I think the only thing I would say against it is that we really don't need to know the exact details of a french kiss. But hey, he's a man so it's par for the course. Bottom line: this is a must-read if you are into conspiracies, historic mystery, and weird science.
Rating: Summary: A thriller to rejoice in Review: Bob Dave's Run to the Sun bears the hallmarks of a writer who knows his background material so well (places, courtroom types, psychology) that he carries the reader along absolutely convincingly. I particularly like his precision of topograpgy, both in Hawaii and on the Mainland; his places enrich his narrative in a way that makes this, his first novel, truly a tour de force. He has the enviable ability to get inside his characters' thinking (hardly surprising: he's a psychologist after all) and make even the apparently far-fetched seem plausible. He writes intelligently for the intelligent reader and has added an excellent piece of fiction to the suspense genre. I look with eagerness for his next book.
Rating: Summary: Horrible! Review: Don't waste your time. This is a horribly written book and is DULL! DULL! DULL!
Rating: Summary: THE BEST SUSPENSE NOVEL I READ Review: I AM RETIRED AND HAVE AMPLE TIME TO READ NOVELS. MANY NOVELS OF THIS GENRE ARE WRITTEN BY FORMULA AND BECOME DULL. THE AUTHOR HAS USED HIS UNDERSTANDING OF PEOPLE AND SENSE OF INTRIGUE TO ENTICE AND DELIGHT THE READER. THIS NOVEL IS FULL OF SURPRISES. THE PLOT BEGINS WITH AN EVERYDAY CUSTODY BATTLE FOR CHILDREN AND EVOLVES INTO A WORLD OF EVIL AND CRUELTY. WITH EVERY PAGE, THIS READER WANTED TO SEE REVENGE AND JUSTICE. THE CHARACTERS IN THE BOOK ARE EASY TO IDENTIFY WITH AND I AM EAGER TO READ MR. DAVE'S NEXT BOOK. I TRUST HE WILL CONTINUE TO USE HIS TALENT IN A FRESH AND INVIGORATING STYLE.
Rating: Summary: Electrifying! Review: I first stumbled across this marvelous debut title while perusing an Amazon.com list entitled, "Find Really Hot Mysteries Not Necessarily in the Top 100." When I came across Run to the Sun again, this time in author Bonnie Toews' list, "Top Picks for Male Thriller Novelists," I clicked over to the book's Amazon.com site, read the reviews, and thought to myself, "Why not?" Was I ever rewarded! This is a can't-put-it-down read that I blazed through in two days. I devour novels like this for fun, entertainment, and escape. Run to the Sun hit a bull's eye for me on all counts. It's fast-paced, spiced with excellent and witty dialogue, and populated with characters I found myself emotionally invested in. Best of all, the plot is highly intriguing and original, a tightly, and intricately, woven web of suspense that keeps you hooked from the prologue right to the final word (for a detailed plot description, see the review on this site written by a reader named Marcus Webb). I look forward to more in the future from Mr. Dave, who for me is a wonderfully fresh voice in the thriller/mystery genre.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Book! (and I've read them all) Review: I get in a rut of buying books only from name-brand authors (Grisham, Clancy, Ludlum, etc.), so it was with a ho-hum attitude that I purchased RUN TO THE SUN on a friend's recommendation. What a delightful surprise! I typically stick to the CIA / FBI / White House style thrillers. Run to the Sun was a refreshing change for me (theme that is). It had as much action and intrigue as all of my "name brand" authors, and I thoroughly enjoyed the perspective of Dr. Santorini (psychologist, runner and superdad). The characters in the novel were priceless, too. I actually purchased three more copies of this book as gifts for friends (something I NEVER do even with Grisham and Clancy novels). I'm a frequent business traveler and devour books like this on flights (confession: I started this book on a flight and found myself blowing off work the next day so I could finish Dave's novel! Hope my boss isn't reading this!). I now find myself in bookstores and airport shops scanning the "new release" section for Bob Dave's next novel. Anyone out there now when this is coming?!?!?!?! I recommend adding this guy to your must read list. It's a terrific book!
