Summary: gotti: the rise and fall
Review: Allthough parts of this book read like the new york times,i think jerry went to great lengths to get the events of the story in the correct order.also jerry gives a view from both sides which is unbiased to one or the other and while some of the events are debatable i think you would find jerrys account more credible than other sources .jerry goes to great length to illustrate how the legal aspects were and as i am from england and not knowing how your legal structure works i found this helpfull to understand how things worked.on the whole a very detailed account of the rise and fall of the dapper don himself.a good read one for the openminded.

Summary: Great Research
Review: Capeci was able to give outsiders a look into the world of the Mafia as well as how hard law enforcement work to stop them. The research Mr. Capeci did for this book is incredible. The book also shows that law enforcement will do anything to get there man and they had personel reasons to nail Gotti. The book also shows the arrogance of John Gotti. He truley believed he was untouchable and had law enforcement not bent, or broke the rules, Gotti may have died a free man.

Summary: THE authoritative book on GOTTI
Review: every other book on gotti pales in comparison to this one! it's even better than the HBO movie (which was based on this book). not surprising since capeci is THE expert on all things 'mob' -- when you're done with this book check out his ganglandnews site for your weekly mob fix!!

Summary: This book is total BS! One star was being nice!
Review: Folks, let's face it. People love mob stories whether they are true or not. These two yo-yo's Capeci and Mustain wrote all their material with at best, second hand information and alot of rumor. Keep in mind that Mr. Gotti never granted anyone an interview or testified on his own behalf, and has never collected one dime off his name while these so called "organized crime" beat writers make millions off of the gullible public.Do yourselves a favor. Go buy a good book written by a real writer, not a tabloid media hound. The real truth to the fodder that's written in this book lies with John Gotti and he's taking it with him to his grave.....

Summary: A complete look at the life of John Gotti
Review: Gotti: Rise and Fall, is a very thorough look at the life of mob boss John Gotti. It is a must have for any Gotti fan, or anyone interested in mob history. The book goes into John's life in great detail. I believe this book paints an accurate picture of Gotti; it goes into his roots, his lifestyle choices, and his criminal activities. The book's greatest strenghth is the fact that it does not show Gotti as a sympathetic character or a victim, it simply gives the facts.

Summary: Not all that
Review: I have read half of the book so far, and I must say that it is not impressing me. Well it does give the stories of how Gotti came to rule the Gambino family, I have to keep checking the title to see if I am reading about Gotti. Like I said, I have only read half of the book, but so far, most of it has been about Sammy Gravano. Well he did play a large role in Gotti coming to power, I think that so far to much of this book has been given over to him. When I finish the rest of the book, I will let all of you know if my opinion of the book has changed

Summary: Rise and Fall is a Must read!
Review: I think the book is excellent. As a mafia novice who purchased the book for something to read during spring break, I read the book in one night- I could not put it down. It does a good job at detailing the organization of the Gambino family and Cosa nostra in general. It also gives good biographical accounts of both Gotti and Gravano. I find mob movies empty most of the time so reading a non-fiction account of Mob life in its most famous family was fascinating for me. For 6 bucks, you get ten times more out of it than an 8 dollar movie.

Summary: How Gotti got there and how he was finally defeated
Review: I think this book is a must read for people who are fans of John Gotti and for people who are generaly intersted in organozed crime. This book not only portrays an acurate picture of the rise and fall of John Gotti but it also gives readers a picture of the inside workings of the Gambino crime family. It is very interesting and you can learn a lot.

Summary: Workman-like account
Review: In a town where the headlines in popular newspapers run to breathlessly silly extremes ("Headless body found in topless bar!"), Capeci and Mustain do a workman-like job of piecing together John Gotti's disastrous reign as head of the Gambino crime family.

The book is a good example of old-fashioned journalism -- and I mean that in the most complimentary of terms. Capeci and Mustain obviously spent a lot of time and shoe leather talking to sources on both sides of the law to cobble together their narrative.

Sammy "The Bull" Gravano comes off as a tragic character of almost Shakespearean proportions -- far smarter, far deadlier, far more committed to the life than his boss. By comparison, John Gotti himself comes across as mean, stupid and loutish. How much truth there is to those characterizations is debatable.

There are some irritating aspects to Capeci and Mustain's writing style, especially their unfortunate tendency to descend into stereotypical portrayals of the Gambino family members mentioned in the book ("Minchia!").

On the whole, though, this is a nice, quick read on a dark, dreary winter's Sunday, which is exactly the use I put it to. Badda-bing, badda-boom....

Summary: A look at John Gotti's short time as a Mafia boss
Review: Jerry Capeci of the New York Daily News gives an inside look at the rise to power of John Gotti, the boss of the Gambino crime family. He explores the assassination that propelled Gotti to the top, as well as the trial that led to his downfall. It is a great story for all people interested in the Mafia or just John Gotti.
