Rating: Summary: Funny Book -- Too Bad It's All True! Review: What is Congress other than a location where greedy, self-righteous, "whores" come up with arguments to "give away" stuff to us all year, but have the decency to leave us a bill on April 15th? In Parliament of Whores, P. J. O'Rourke shows us that our government has, over a period of years, cultivated a society where people no longer take responsibility for their own decission making. Every small decission, every mistake, no matter how slight, no matter how trivial, is seen as reason for the federal government to become involved. We are no longer a society where we settle differences between each other. Now we have to invite a central authority to settle our differences. This is a sad indictment of our modern life. However, as long as we must put up with the strange policies our government decides to adjudicate (witness California's legislature and governor Gray Davis circa 2003 for a more in-depth view) for us, at least we should have a good laugh. This book is a good laugh. Ah, but how I wish most of the things contained in it were not true. Michael
Rating: Summary: Three stars for humor. Five stars for insight. Review: With loads of interesting insight and a smattering of comedy, O'Rourke churns out a decent poli-sci book. Although I rarely found myself laughing out loud, I often found myself going, "Hmmmm, very interesting. This guy's a freakin' genious". He may lean just a smidg to the right but that's because he's using reason. Which is always fine with me.
