Summary: How Wal-Mart is Destroying America
Review: I knew Wal-Mart is evil, but not this bad. It made me more secure in my decision to NEVER shop at Wal-Mart. This book has a lot of very important information that shows how Walton Ent. uses horrible buisness practices to add more money to its $500 million+ company. And even though many companies do some of the same things, they aren't doing it all, like Wal-Mart.

Summary: 85 year old Texan has Wal-Mart on the ropes
Review: I loved this book. It exposes Wal-Mart for the bad neighbor it is. If there is a Wal-Mart coming into your town, fight it. Do whatever you have to do to stop it from happening. Buy this book, buy "Mr. Sam's" book. Use Sam Walton's own words against the bullies from Bentonville. Wal-Mart will destroy your community and create double digit unemployment. Just like it did with my hometown of Madera California.

Summary: Good but be prepared
Review: I recommend this book. It details some frontline experience with the Wal-Mart monster. The big points are: cheaply bought good thanks to sweatshop labor, corporate greed, abuse of employees (although mild by worldwide standards), shirking of social responsibility, and misleading advertisements.

The trouble with this book is that instead of presenting the facts and letting the reader decide for themself the author tells us what to think. Another example of questionable tactics is in a bullet list of Wal-Mart's bad behaviours: the author includes an extra bullet that says "And Much More". Well then what else?

Overall this is a gopod book that points out some dark truths about the seemingly good natured, christian beacon of smiley faced capitilism. An enlightining read

Summary: Capitalism, from an old Marxists' point of view.......
Review: I simply cannot comprehend the anti-capitalist rantings on this and other sites. Bill Quinn is a bitter old man. He is bitter about his life and about his life choices. He obviously resides in a fantasy world in which nothing changes and progress is unheard of.

Is Wal-Mart evil? No, because even though corporations are considered persons for business purposes, they in fact have no persona. That is, a corporation cannot be evil because a corporation is not a living being. It is a legal entity comprised of physical assets and managed by people.

I will repeat my usual comments with regard to anti-Wal-Mart individuals.

1. If you think Wal-Mart is a horrible employer-don't apply for a position there.

2. If you think Wal-Mart is a horrible buyer-don't deal with Wal-Mart.

3. If you think Wal-Mart is not a consumer's best friend-don't shop there.

Wal-Mart does NOT put the little man out of business. The only "little man" harmed by Wal-Mart (ie. by the customers)is the mom and pop that is open M-F from 9:30am to 4:00pm with an hour for lunch. It is the mom and pop that offers a poor selection of shoddy merchandise at ridiculously high prices because you cannot get this merchandise anywhere else. Then, when Wal-Mart comes to town, the people who have been held hostage by small-town economics choose to shop at Wal-Mart. Low prices, convenient hours, great selection, no hassle return policy, and a clean shopping experience make Wal-Mart the retailer of choice. Certainly there is a reason why those with a choice, the consumer, choose Wal-Mart.

When our new super Wal-Mart opened, it spawned two seperate shopping plazas, including a new Giant Eagle, a Target, A Dick's Sporting Goods, Sam's Club, Starbucks, Quiznos, numerous restaraunts, clothing stores, pet stores, shoe stores, jewelry stores, office supply stores, etc. All of these stores are thriving. Given the arguments posted here, there should be 20 empty storefronts and one evil Wal-Mart, still open for business.
Reality over Rhetoric, people.

Finally, the economic impact. I will not mention Wal-Marts substantial charitable endeavors. Rather, I will mention the 1.5 million jobs and millions of indirect jobs. I will mention the nearly $300 billion in stock market wealth created by Wal-Mart. I will mention the billions of dollars in wages, taxes, and benefits to local communities. I will mention the billions in income taxes paid each year. Finally, I will mention Wal-Marts contribution to the GDP. Not only does Wal-Mart contribute to top line GDP growth, it also contributes to productivity by decreasing the cost of purchased goods billions each year. American consumers save anywhere from $10-$20 billion a year because of Wal-Marts downward price pressure. That money is used to benefit consumers everywhere.

Think about the facts before you begin a debate about a subject most of you do not understand. Oh, do I welcome responses!

Summary: Not a case of paranoia, but a wake up call to us all....
Review: I've read reviews describing Mr. Quinn as being paranoid and fanatical, and I beg to differ. Mr. Quinn is not randomly selecting a corporate victim, but is speaking on behalf of the "little people" who are turned into thoughtless, emotionless drones by the corporations surrounding them. In this case, it happens to be Wal-Mart.

His statements are not unfounded, as he can cite proof for all cases that he discusses.

Mr. Quinn has a definite sense of humor that outshines many other authors. He speaks like your feisty older next-door neighbor, speaking in an authoritative manner brought about by life's experience and not by an overblown ego.

Think about it, though...This man has nothing to gain by writing this book, making an individualistic stand against the masses. Why begrudge him the right to write his opinions? Sometimes the truth hurts, but the lies can hurt even more. Think even of daily sweatshop abuses that are reported; they even make a difference in most cases, as consumers change their minds about purchasing certain brands. At some point or another, we need to get our thoughts across to the public, in order to preserve our human dignity in the face of those who would like to sell us out for the sake of the American dollar.

Mr. Quinn, thank you for this book.

Summary: Read this book prior to going to Wal-Mart
Review: If every thoughtful consumer read this book, Wal-Mart would be going out of business. Throughout the book, Bill Quinn repeatedly reminds the reader that he is no friend of the Waltons and their ilk. His writing style is folksy, extremely easy to read and factual. I even learned of some new reasons not to like Wal-Mart, however much of it I've heard and seen before. I wish that the writer had more specific statistics to back up his anecdotal examples. It would have made his conlusions even more compelling.

You have to wonder how a company with such predatory business ethics could have been so successful. I guess it speaks for the ignorance of the masses.

Summary: Cry me a river
Review: It never ceases to amaze me how much people want to whine and whimper about Walmart. After having spent the last 2 years in a town where I had to pay 48 dollars for a 4 year old's bathing suit I was ecstatic to see Walmart finally move into town. The local businesses protest just the same this book does. They have carried on and had a fit because they can't compete with Walmart. Are we supposed to feel sorry for them?? I feel sorry for someone who has to pay 48 dollars for a child's swimsuit or 30 dollars for a pair of child's shorts that aren't even name brand. I'll take my 10 dollar swimsuit from Walmart and my 4.99 shorts any day. If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. If you overcharge people then what do you expect? Sam Walton didn't do anything that anyone else couldn't do. People can piss and moan about it all day long but Walmart is here to stay. I say go get a pretzel at the snack bar, shake the hand of the senior citizen handing out happy face stickers and load up the cart with bargains. And if you must stand outside Walmart having a pity party with your protest sign just make sure you push my cart back for me if I forget.

Summary: Book of Complete Truths!
Review: Mr. Quinn has somehow hit the nail directly on the head. Being an ex-Wal-Mart employee, I can relate first hand to the greed of this so-called "Greatest store in the World." The stories of exploitation of the employees would be completely unbelievable to everyone but the poor people who have been there. The negative economic impact is also covered in this book and shows how Sam Walton has succeeded in putting so many little people, whose lives depended on their small businesses, out on the street to starve. The battle with Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Alabama right now, should show most people the greed of this company. This book should be a required read for all people who shop at Wal-Mart.

Summary: Confirmed What I Thought All Along
Review: Ok, I'm sure not every Wal-Mart is bad. But much of what was in here is happening in my town of 25000. I used to live in a large city, no Wal-Marts there when I moved. Never heard of the place. Moved to this much smaller town and learned that it was the place to shop, though the ceiling high boxes, general mess, and poor quality products kinda scared me. I learned to live with it because there was nothing downtown. Obviously the mom and pop stores were long gone before I got there. Wal-Mart had created a new kind of downtown a half a mile away from the old one. It wasn't too bad. They let us sell GS cookies in the store for a couple years. Then they said that we weren't even allowed to sell them outside the entrance. They're even mean to the Salvation Army ringers. They used to let them stand in the store, then pushed out into the foyer, then the 15 degree blizzard outside. Now they built a supercenter half an hour away and are closing the original. Thank God a Kroger and Office Max survived the beast. I would rather not discuss the time I got haggled for staring at pencils too long, or when they stopped me to check receipts even though I didn't set the alarm off. Well, I just wish I'd known my town BWM
