Summary: Tough love for women's fashion
Review: Mr. Molloy's original book taught me how to dress when I first graduated from college. Now that I've finished my pregnancies, and have a "mature" figure, I was hoping I could drop suits and wear dresses. Especially because buying suits in Los Angeles has been impossible for decades. After reading this, I went back to suits, and, sadly, it has made a big difference! We can dress intelligently for the type of attention we want, based on Mr. Molloy's research.

Summary: Desperately Wanting to Know..
Review: My boss considers this book to be the absolute truth. I especially hated the part that says, "if you're not thin, you're not upper class, you'll never be successful no matter how well you dress." That's so disheartening! I'm losing, but it will be a long time before I'm "thin" -- someone please write to me and tell me you know successful career women who are overweight--please!

Summary: Informative
Review: New Women's Dress for Success is a very informative book, however it is also a very repetitive book. It has great information for women to be success at work, however it seems that much of the information the author gives is not realy necessary. It is a big book for not much information.

Summary: Interest book
Review: NEW WOMEN's DRESS FOR SUCCESS is an interest only book. If you are a woman, want to gain more respect and authority at work (or more money),or are interested in how to dress for work related ocations, then this is the book for you. If you are ready to get a pen and take notes, buy it and read it well. But if you are only looking for something to read, this is your warning: STAY AWAY!!!! There are plenty other books out there for you to read, that are a lot more interesting.

NEW WOMEN'S DRESS FOR SUCCESS is not a terrible book. It is a fast read. . . but is extremely repetitive which can be good if you really want the information to stick. . . otherwise, it will drive you crazy. The editing company did a poor job because this book should be numerous pages shorter.

However, it is extremely informative. It advises women for every work occasion from company outing, to company dinner, to every-day work and so-called "casual days". It also touches on make up, accessories, language, shoes, hair, etc.

Molloy ran many tests, experiments, and surveys (first and second hand) which are discussed in this book, and might I add, quite interesting. The conclusions he came to deal with the importance of dressing well if you are a woman. Dressing well can make or break your career and for this reason, he is here to help. He informs you about the colors to wear to gain authority, those to have your guilty client wear to look more innocent in front of a jurry, etc. This book has numerous great pointers and no, none of these things are 100% sure, but they have been tested and if followed correctly, can have a great effect on your status.

While many readers are offended by his book and the comments he makes - pertaining to women being skinny, getting plastic surgery, or working to be on "equal footing with a man" - this is the truth. His book is based on fact not opinion and it states the harsh realities of the working field. It is not a book in which he propogates being skinny, or looking fake, but one in which he states that it has been proven that those women are more successful and accepted by society. This is the way the world works, as unjust and wrong as it may be, and his book is there to help you advance through the real world, not to correct it.

I found his book helpful because I am planning to go into law or politics, and his advice will be of much use, especially that I can relate to, such as wearing a red suit if you are petite, to get attention in a large crowd, or . . . the list goes on and on.

And if you are still skeptical about his statements, there is a calendar in the back of the book for you to test out his techniques.

Summary: The book for women's success
Review: New Women's Dress for Success is great book for women who are working in a business environment like a company, a hotel and the government. It is for those who want to dress attractively and efficiently, but not too bright. After I have read this book, I realize that what I wear is really important to my career. As a high school senior, I will carry the message of the book on my choice of clothing, and I need to dress efficiently and attractive to be successful in college and my future.

Summary: The Key to Looking Successful
Review: The book, New Women's Dress for Success, by John T. Molloy is not a story with a plot. The book is a guide for how women should dress for their different jobs. Molloy asserts that physical appearance is a larger factor in success than women recognize. Although his ideas may be ingredients for success, they also ride the edge of being offensive as he details the values of a male-dominated white, middle- to upper-class society.

Mr. Molloy explains that in order to be successful and be treated like you are successful, you must look and behave in a successful manner. The key to looking successful is dressing and acting in an upper class style. For example, he suggests that a woman must wear high quality/expensive clothes, and speak properly. This conveys an image that fits with the business world. "If you are not sure, buy the most expensive, traditional model and you will be right 80 percent of the time," says Molloy when discussing how to choose the proper attire for the job.

Molloy emphasizes that dressing appropriately for interviews is important in getting the job. He notes and reinforces that there is a double standard depending on whether the interviewer is a man or a woman. "If you are being interviewed by a man, it is best to dress as if you already have the job and have even received two promotions." He recommends that when a woman is the interviewer that one should dress for the job for which she is applying. "Both men and women doing the hiring rejected women who came looking too cute, too delicate, too feminine, or too sexy." Molloy also notes that poor hygiene, heavy make-up, long nails, and small clothes always are inappropriate and give the image of a lower class look.

Molloy makes some recommendations that are good common sense. For example, he says, make-up should look natural and clothes should look professional. He asserts that a jacket always helps to make you look professional and that wool is always the best material. He states that different colors make people see you differently. Lighter shades make you look friendly, while darker shades make you look more intimidating. These seem like good suggestions and are easy to implement for most people regardless of their economic resources.

Molloy, however, also addresses issues of weight and for some women this may be both intimidating and offensive. In an ideal world, women would not be treated differently in a business environment because of their weight. "There is no getting around it: thin is upper class, thin is beautiful, and thin is in," says Molloy, recognizing that this is not an ideal world and women are discriminated against because of how much they weigh. While Molloy suggests that women should exercise and go on diets, he also makes some suggestions for over-weight women. For example, he discourages tight clothing and light colors.

Overall, this book can benefit any businesswoman who is trying to be successful. It will teach her how to increase the likelihood of people treating her as a professional, but she will have to endure the facts of the double standards that exist for women in the marketplace. Despite these issues, Molloy's book will help any woman to be successful.

Summary: Look at successful women in business
Review: There is a lot of negative reviews of this book. Apparently women don't want to accept the cold truth about business dressing. Business people make judgements on first impressions. Molloy has studied the habits of executives and tells us what they think. If you look around at women CEOs and and the like, they are dressed just like Molloy describes in this book. They played the game and got to the top. They didn't complain that they couldn't wear certain things--they just did it. In his book he tells you if you don't believe him test it yourself. Dress your way and make notes of how you are treated and the level of respect you receive. Then dress his way and compare the results. Try it--it could be an eye-opener. The only thing this book lacks is photos, otherwise it is a very informative guide.

Summary: TELLS THE TRUTH ABOUT FEMALE/FEMALE HARASSMENT
Review: This book is a gem if only due to the fact that Molloy tells the truth about modern women in the workplace. MANY WOMEN ARE JEALOUS OF BEAUTIFUL WOMEN, AND THEY WORK AGAINST THE CAREER ASPIRATIONS OF THOSE WOMEN THEY ARE ENVIOUS OF.

One need only listen to the numerous catty comments that women make about other women, and one can see that WOMEN are the ones actively working to keep other women from success. Therefore, very beautiful women are accused of having slept with the boss, using their looks to get ahead, or any number of nasty things that may not be at all true! Some women actively attempt to ruin careers and reputations just based on the good looks of the women they are insanely envious of. This is a very serious problem for professional women, and it is just ridiculous that men are always accused of creating a "hostile and offensive environment" most of the time, when women are much worse to each other.

I have been in some of the finest department stores only to have the wonderful, articulate, elegant salesperson given a rude, verbal backhand from a coworker, and this was done right in front of me! I was so furious at one woman that I promptly complained to management and then wrote a nice letter commending the poor girl who had been helping me with such professionalism and grace.

Kudos to Molloy for exposing what modern feminists hate to talk about, the dirty little secret of feminism...SNOW WHITE/CINDERELLA SYNDROME in the workplace (female envy of attractive women).

Don't hate them because they are beautiful. Most customers prefer a beauty to a jealous shrew. Corporate America should promote the pretty ones and get rid of the unattractive troublemakers.

Other books that may be of interest to readers of "New Women's Dress for Success" are "Survival of the Prettiest: The Science of Beauty" by Nancy Etcoff and "The Substance of Style" by Virginia Postrel. Both books play up the importance of good looks, be it regarding a person or a product.

The hideous, jealous, backstabbing shrews of this world should just slink off into the dreadful holes from which they climbed forth...or try learning to become more attractive, as Molloy helps one do in this wonderful book.

Summary: Useful for some people
Review: This book is exactly right about "business casual" -- it is much harder for women than men. It's also great if you're interviewing or working at a more conservative firm. However, right now I work at a "business casual" company, and I've lived in whole towns where there was no place in the city that required a tie. I wish he had provided more advice for navigating these situtations, since (as he says) they are difficult.

I have to agree with some of the reviewers that I don't like many of the rules, but that doesn't mean that they're not accurate. Look through any annual report and find pictures of female board managers/CEOs, and they *are* dressing for success. I don't think Molloy is sexist for reporting the way much of the world is; he doesn't claim it's fair or just.
