Summary: Tragic but still hilariously funny
Review: After finishing this novel about the drug fueled world of the club kids that James St. James describes with great detail I almost felt like I'd overdosed on his writing. A little past the half way mark his constant descriptions of their hedonistic world and the ever-changing group of so-called friends exhausted me. It was an interesting book at turns hilariously funny and yet depressingly melancholy. The lengths these kids took to be the center of attention and fill their lives with excitement was devasting. The backstabbing and bitter resentment of each other and the utter lack of any sort of real connection with others besides the surface was what saddened me the most.

This was quick read and James St. James has a wonderful sense of humor that I enjoyed reading despite some repetitiveness. I'd love to read more of his witticisms in a fiction novel someday.

Summary: Skrod-la-da!
Review: After seeing the movie Party Monster, I decided to pick up a copy of the book Disco Bloodbath, which was featured near the end of the movie. The paperback edition has been renamed Party Monster, which I think is unfortunate, since this book is really more than just a paperback version of the movie. A quick, highly entertaining romp, this book is certainly not for everyone. It takes a certain amount of openminded acceptance to be able to read a book detailing the rise and fall of clubkid-turned-murderer, Michael Alig; however, if you can stomach the descriptions of rampant drug use and its aftermath, then what you find is a wholly engaging and addictive read.

Summary: ah the days, Disco 2000
Review: Having trolled the NYC underground club scene for a good decade and having spent many a night at Disco 2000 I was looking forward to seeing the movie.

Aside from the fact that I haven't seen worse acting since Attack of the Clones, Kulkin is pretty bad, he looks the part but can't act to save his soul, the movie was pretty entertaining.

Based on the book Disco Blood Bath the movie is skewed because the story is viewed through the prism of James St James who furthered his own career with the book at the crash of Disco 2000 in the later part of the mid 90's.

The facts though are for the most part accurate. In two hours they were able to pretty much get in all the highlights of what made Alig a legend in the NYC party scene: the originality, the prescription room, the hot body contests, the outlaw parties, bringing a big trance/techno DJ into the NYC night life, the crazy costumes etc. etc. etc.

And ultimately what made Alig fall: massive amounts of drug abuse which culminated in a murder.

They even tied in the Phil Donohue episode. What I thought was pretty hilarious was in that scene they actually had Richie Rich and Amanda in the audience. Dammit they looked the same 10 years ago when they were trolling around the limelight! And I also thought the footage from the real outlaw party in the subway station was great! It brought back memories.

The only thing I didn't like was the fact that they didn't tie in the ultimate absurdity of how they finally caught Alig. Namely because he put the remains of Angel in a Box which did not sink but floated to the shores of Staten Island!!! The E true Hollywood story gets in to this.

I must admit Disco 2000 was probably one of the most entertaining parties in NYC club history. It has made a permanent mark in the underground Club Culture and will not be matched or paralleled anytime soon. He and the club kids really did have everything going in harmony to make a brilliant party. But when you spin too fast you are bound to get out of control which leads to my next point...

What I did think was good about the movie was that if you watched it you could come away with one lesson: drugs are a horrible thing and when you associate with others who do drugs all the time you are bound to do them and maybe if things get too bad you will get caught up in something horrible!

I think that the murder of Angel probably saved the lives of others who left the party scene when Disco 2000 died; it got others out before it was too late. I remember Keoki saying something about that. Ironic the victims name was Angel.....

Nuff Said!

Summary: Must Read for Any Hipster or Wannabe
Review: How funny that other reviewers have been surprised or even disappointed at how self-indulgent James St. James is in this book. He's a DRAG QUEEN! Drag queens are all about self-indulgence or maybe you've never known one. The story-telling is good, if not all over the place. It's an entertaining read, to be sure. Of course, the subjects aren't what society would call "entertaining" (you know... murder, drugs, etc), but it's very real for a lot of people. JSJ's southern upbrining shines through in his story-telling. Sure, he says he's from Michigan but the dear old thing spent plenty of time with his wealthy and quite southern father in South Florida. (Yes, there are VERY southern southerners in South Florida... maybe just not plopped in a club in South Beach). Something tells me James will be out with a book about this highly entertaining southern family... or at least he should. And being the self-indulgent queen he is, I'm sure he reads every last review of his books and if he's reading this one, James, please get on with writing the fabulous story of Broward County kin. In the meantime, anyone else should absolutely buy this book. It's just a shame that beautiful shoe no longer graces the cover.

Summary: Just FAB
Review: I am a almost 30 year old accountant with a sensible car and a mortgage and this book made me want to chuck it all, go to NYC and dress up like a club kid, and do things that would SHOCK my friends.
Oh and the story was quite catchy also. James St. James is so witty ! I can't tell you how many times I grabbed my husband and said "here read this it is just HYSTERICAL".
Well much to his delight I finished the book in around 24 hours and that included work and sleep !
Just a good little read - go and get yourself a copy !

Summary: Hated it
Review: I found the author was more interested in letting you know who James St. James was rather then Michael Alig. I guess I just like more of a straightforward read but I found this book to be vapid and really not all that shocking. The sarcastic tone of the book gets pretty old after awhile too.

Summary: skrinkle skroddle le do da
Review: I found this book to be pure hilarity, despite the obviously disturbing subject matter it dealt with. I had seen the documentary "Party Monster" (and loved it) months before actually reading the book, but I'm sooo glad I did read it. James St. James is a hilarious writer and I did catch myself laughing outloud at his sarcasm and wit. He has this ability to capture you with his writing in such a way that you seem to be falling into the strange K-holes he is describing. Oh darlings, you will absolutely enjoy this read.

Summary: An adventure
Review: I had no idea what world I was about to enter when I started this adventure with James St. James. His use of storytelling is absolutly fabulous, at times I felt like I was right there in NYC with the rest of the club kids. Prior to reading this book I knew nothing of the New York City club life St. James writes about, but his story of Michael Alig doesn't just tell of the murder of Angel Melendez, but instead tells you of their lives, and lifestyles. I was absolutly amazed, and couldn't put the story down. A must read, but may be only for the open-minded.

Summary: Great Book
Review: I literally COULD NOT put the book down from the moment I picked it up. I would highly advise anyone who is interested in reading a fabulous yet tradgic story of fame, drag, drugs, clubs and murder to buy this. James St James, has done a wonderful job telling a crazy story of his earlier years.

Summary: sawed off
Review: I never got into books or movies that attempt to define the drug experience. I've yet to feel it through images or words.
Party monster is another casualty.
The book offers little insight on Angel Melandez. If here weren't included in the narrative I'd of barely missed him.
The book is about James St. James.
Big deal. His story isn't all that interesting.
