Summary: A Classic of 20th Century Thought
Review: When all is said and done (and that will take a while) on the studies of philosophy in the 20th century, two names will stand out as being the most influential: Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The Phenomenology of Perception was Merleau-Ponty's second work and lays the foundation for his later writings. What Merleau-Ponty attempts to do in this work is to take phenomenology away from the idealist and dualistic tracks of Husserl and Sartre and ground it firmly in ontology through a psychological analysis of perception. In doing so, Merleau-Ponty lays the foundations for Structuralism and its later incarnations, for better or worse, Poststructuralism and Deconstructuralism. (Derrida and Foucault attended his lectures.)Required reading for any student of 20th century thought and anyone who wants to know how philosophy came to its present position.

Summary: The future of Philosophy is right here, under my eyes...
Review: When I read for the first time this book, was in a Course of Phenomenology on Catholics University in Lisboa. Now, I am working with Professor Isabel Renaud in my Doctorate's Project about «Body, Sense and Afectivity in Maurice Merleau-Ponty». Today, I think the future of Philosophy is in this book. The importance of Neurosciences, allways repeated by the studies of António Damásio and Jean-Pierre Changeaux, tell us the primacy of reflexion. Nowadays, we have to understand world and the conexion of our lifes. The brain, the body, the emotions and the reason, are themes of philosophers, psychologists, neuroscientists, artists, medicines... It is curious? May be... I hope, Men can find the answer to the question: "What is real truth?" A complex system of conceps appear is our reflexion, but Merleau-Ponty, ignored by many authors, sings the way to a deep and comprehensive Phenomenology of the concrete experience of myself. This book is an enlightment for philosophers, who need creativity, originality, freedom, sensuality, feeling, emotion and perception on his work. In Portugal, philosophers don't have a good world on employment, so if you read this book, you can begin another way in your life, changing ideas, methods... Than, your "look" is over the light - the success of a new philosophy!
Jorge Humberto Dias, Professor of Philosophy in Portugal, Oliveira de Frades.
