Summary: Authentic, gripping.
Review: A solid depiction of life in the Mob, at least as it was thirty and more years ago. Not all of "Joey's" anecdotes are necessarily true, and it's hard to say how many were exagerrated or fabricated. But it definitely has an aura of authenticity. It strips away a lot of the glamor of organized crime, which is why this book disappoints some readers, but I would put it up there with Wiseguys and Born to Steal as the best books on the Mob in recent years.

Summary: Authentic, gripping.
Review: I'm not sure if "Joey" is a real guy or what, but the book was quite entertaining regardless. It details the life of a mafia hit-man. Each chapter tends to deal with a differnt aspect of the mafia and how they impacted his life. I found it an enjoyable read, and would recommend it to someone with interst in the mafia.

Summary: Joey the Hitman not a hit.
Review: Joey the Hitman started out with much potential, but as the book went on it became repetitive and boring. The only parts I liked was when he told about his own experiences, rather than how the schemes that organized crime use work.

Aside from that the book didn't tell me anything I haven't already read about the 'mafia'. At the time of its release it was probably very informative, but not these days. The worst part of his style is how he would explain how a particular aspect works, then explain it the exact same way in an example only adding names. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

Summary: Joy the HITMAN
Review: Joey with the help of Mr.David Fisher tells one of the best stories about a mafia hitman i've read in awhile. He tells about some of the 30 plus hits he had under his belt.Like you would order a meal.Even telling jokes about things as he has done. And a little mob humor.Even though he is a killer i came to like joey.

Summary: Joey is not the most important factor
Review: Joeys existence is not the most important or fun factor of this book. The most interesting aspect is the detailed description of normal everyday mob activities. Gambling , Loansharking , bribery. This book was a very interesting introduction into what the mafia is really like. I enjoyed every page and stopped reading the book I was reading prior because I became hooked to this one. A very good book if your interested in the complexities of playing the numbers , loan sharking or any mob activities. Worth the $$$ as much as any book.

Summary: A fun read, very pragmatic about the business of crime.
Review: The only trouble with this sort of memoir, whether it's by Joey or by somebody who infiltrated the Klan, is that there is no way to corrobrate his stories. Even so, the discussion of how crime as a business operates is very interesting, and "Joey's" ideas about what could be done to hurt it are right on the money. Basically, legalizing gambling (which has been done in many places since this book came out; I've got two copies of the original paperback printing) legalizing drugs, and in general, legalizing victimless crimes, would have all but put the Mob out of business or forced it to go respectable, like some segments did after Prohibition---many fortunes in the liquor or entertainment industries can trace their origins to gangsters.

Summary: Don't waste your time or money...
Review: This "true account" of a mafia hitman felt about as hard-boiled as a close-captioned episode of "Walker: Texas Ranger" or "Murder, She Wrote".

The story doesn't ring true. No names, no locations. And that the author goes to such an extent to explain his interview methodology and the general mystery of his subject just adds to the "something don't smell right" feeling that I had after finishing it.

I was sourly disappointed.

Summary: Like a visit to the Dentist
Review: This has to be one of the most boring books about the mafia in publication. Joey becomes a grind to finish after the first chapter but since I bought it I figured I might as well finish it. There was nothing in the book that held the readers attention, it was monotonous. If I borrowed money from Joey and was late I would pay him just to avoid being bored to death by our pal Joey. Joey was not a member of the mafia he was an associate. I think if I were in the mafia and a street soldier I would ask my capo to take my mafia membership card away rather than work with my pal Joey. This book was not worth the tree that was cut down to have it written. I would judge the book as a minus 10 but you dont go that far.

Summary: I Got Clipped By Joey
Review: This was a very fun introduction to the world of the mafia. It is light hearted and is very insightful. I am not sure if Joey exists but some of the facts standing up. Like the 'meat hook kill' I have heard other sources report on this and also it tells you a lot about the various strains of the mob business. So if you have a keen interest in the Italian mafia or just organised crime check this book out you will not be disappointed!
