Rating: Summary: Great Book- Please Reed Review: Este libro es absolutamente estupendo!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful family saga Review: I read the English version several years ago and loved it. The author has a lovely literary style that makes you laugh, cry, and sigh. The historical setting was similar to that of my grandparents and their families who came here to California because of the terror of the Mexican Revolution of 1910. My older family members were also raised in the interior valleys and could have worked side by side with some of the Villasenor family members back then. I cried at each chapter and I can hardly wait to see the movie version, which I hope will have well selected actors playing the major parts. I have seen the TV version of the Ballad of Gregorio Cortez and thought it was very well done.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful look at Mexican-American history Review: I really loved this book. The tales of two Mexican families are fascinating, beginning with the Mexican Revolution and continuing through their hardships in adapting to the U.S. The author tells the story of his maternal and paternal grandparents through eyes of love and devotion. Readers will learn why Mexicans sacrifice so much to flee to the U.S. to find a way to feed their families. Those who deplore violations of our border will at least understand why they come and perhaps gain some empathy for their plight. It's a nice counter-balance to isolationist arguments to fence and defend the border with soldiers.
Rating: Summary: Trully Uplifting Review: I was impressed from the moment I heard Victor VillaseƱor speak, his words capture me instantly. This book will mezmorize the reader, no matter the age. This is an exquisite work of art.
Rating: Summary: A compelling story of hardship, determination, and triumph Review: The book is the riveting true story of the author's parents and family history. The book traces the separate story of Villasenor's mother and father, weaving in the history of the Mexican Civil War around 1910. The book ends with the courtship and marriage of his parents. I read most of this book in Spanish, with occassional reference to the English version. From the moment I picked it up (in Spanish) I found the story compelling. Probably the most interesting aspect is the extreme hardship that the families go through in Mexico during the civil war, and how they struggle, with God's help, to survive and triumph despite multiple, unspeakable tragedies. The book gives excellent insights to the history and culture of Mexico and Mexican-Americans. I am now in the process of re-reading it.
Rating: Summary: Great Book- Please Reed Review: This book is a really touching book about a mexican family that struggles through many difficulties. This book can relate to your own life, for example my parents, going through hard times in your life is very difficult for many families, it sometimes causes families to have problems. The two families in this book, met and were both really similar, family problems are hard going through. I recomend you to read this book, my Spanish class read this and I didn't hear of anybody that didn't like it. Read and understand it and try to relate it to your own life, compare it to your life. Please read, it's a very interesting book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent reading for international understanding Review: This book is excellently written and brings about a better understanding of the struggles that immigrants face in arriving at this country, the dreams that propel them through the struggles and difficulties of acculturation and ultimately you share in the joy that accompanies their triumphs. It was especially poignant for me, as I am an immigrant myself and I know whereof the author speaks, having experience a few of those struggles and having heard the stories of my father's challenges and how he overcame them in order to provide a better life for his family.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful family saga Review: Victor Villasenor wrote one of the premier literary works in the entire area of Mexican American Literature when he wrote Rain of Gold (Lluvia de Oro). It is a rare piece of art that can be appreciated by Mexican Americans such as myself or those from other cultures such as my Anglo wife. We felt like together we made the journey with Lupe. While some works like Tomas Rivera's ...Y No Se Lo Trago La Tierra (...And the Earth Did Not Devour Him) can be almost a caricature of Mexican American culture, this book by Villasenor has fully rounded and developed characters that the reader can appreciate, understand, and relate to on a personal level. It is truly a fantastic book.
