Summary: A pleasant read but not for the serious collector
Review: This book is a pleasant addition to the world of pipe smoking, but is certainly not for the serious collector of high grade quality pipes. Positive points. 1.Several good plates of celebrities with their pipes 2.A good introduction on the history of tobacco and pipe smoking around the world. 3.A few good colour plates of Peterson pipes. Negative points; 1.No in depth study of the variety of different pipes on the market 2.No in depth study of pipe makers around the world and their specialites 3.No in depth look at pipe tobacco and tobacco blending 4.Very few colour plates of high grade pipes or freehands,-which is the most tragic. A book that equals "La pipe" published by Flamirillon has yet to be produced!

Summary: Pipe The Art and Lore of a Great Tradition
Review: This book is for the history buff interested in the fine art of how the pipe has made it's evolution from as far back as 500 BC to the present. The discovery of erica arborea growing wild from over two hundred years before being discovered. How King James I in 1604 was looked down upon in his abuse in the sinning against God, Pope Urban VIII issued a formal decree against it. How Frederick the II in 1712 - 1786 banned an entire city from smoking a pipe. This introduces the pipe smokers, like Mark Twain, General Douglas MacArthur, Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and many others. It discusses the growing and harvesting, drying and curing, processing and blending of tobaccos. The different types of tobaccos the how to's in packing the tobacco to the proper way of tapping your pipe when knocking out the ash to cleaning and maintaining your pipe. This a very interesting book if you are into the history of the pipe

Review: This is, without question a wonderfully illustrated "coffe-table" style book. My problem, however, is that it is lacking in information. As a new pipe smoker I was looking for a book that was very nut and bolts in it's approach to pipe and tobacco selection and maintenance. This book does have lots of info on the history of pipes and tobacco, but little instruction on their actual use. If you are a new smoker I would shop for another book. However, if your an old hand with a pipe and don't need someone to tach you how to break in a pipe (or such things) you will probably enjoy this book.
