Rating: Summary: A very useful collection of essays. Review: This medium-sized volume is a huge resource for students of South Asia - a field that has indeed been marred by historiographical elitism, as Ranajit Guha states in one of the various introductory essays. Although this volume contains some essays that are harder to read than others (such as the introduction by the elusively brilliant Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak), some essays are gems, such as GANDHI as MAHATMA, and TOUCHING THE BODY - an excellent perspective on the Indian Plague and the role of the pyhsical body of the colonized.
