Summary: A Great Way to Have Fun with Homeschooling
Review: ...The book states that it is a "Complete Curriculum" for the early years except for math and phonics... Without phonics and math you DO NOT have a complete curriculum. Math and Phonics are the most important subjects in the early years.

This curriculum falls short in many areas. Take my advice and spend your hard earned money someplace else.

Summary: A Mother's Dream Curriculum
Review: Five In A Row for ages 4-8 is a delightful tool for teaching children. It instills a joy of learning through a thematic approach and covers a vast assortment of topics. The many lessons for each story provide different levels for multi-age families. The simplier lessons can be done when the child is younger and the story book repeated with more advanced lessons completed at that time. The great thing about Five In A Row is that it can be used for 2,3 or even 4 years if desired and the story books can be checked out at the library which makes it a very inexpensive curriculum. This cozy, easy, effective approach to learning is ideal for homeschoolers.

Summary: We love Five In A Row!
Review: Five In A Row is the finest curriculum available today. It is a unit study that uses wonderful children's picture books as the centerpiece. Part of the beauty of the curriculum is it's cost-effectiveness. Most of the books will be readily available at a good library and inter-library loan will supply the rest. I am personally trying to collect the books for my home library. Yes, some of the books are sadly now out-of-print, but your local library can get them for you. Even if I am unable to locate a couple of the titles, the curriculum is still well-rounded and complete without them.

This curriculum is extremely easy to implement. It requires little or no planning. Just choose one or two of the wonderful lessons that Jane Lambert has written. It's all in the manual! My 4yo and 8yo sons both participate on their own levels, and even my 21 month old enjoys the illustrations and the sound of mom's voice! It is ideal for multiple age levels.

This program covers Social Studies, Language Arts, Art, Applied Math and Science. It does not require that your child know how to read, nor is it a "teach your child to read" curriculum. The only supplements needed are reading/phonics and mathematics.

I can't say enough about Five In A Row! I highly recommend you give it a try. Your children will thank you!

Summary: Five in a Row, Volume 1
Review: For a homeschooler, this wonderful curriculum is exceptionally well-written and organized so that anyone can pick it up and teach from it at a moment's notice. Jane Lambert has included all information necessary to teach geography, social studies, language arts, art, applied math and science for each unit so that if library materials or other research materials were currently unavailable, the teaching could still continue.

There are nineteen picture book titles (ex: Grandfather's Journey by Allen Say) with extensive lesson plans for each title. Units can be repeated easily without repeating the same information each time. My children have been using Five in a Row for three years and the knowledge they have gained is incredible! This is a fun and enjoyable curriculum that teaches a love for learning and I highly recommend it!

Summary: Excellent literature-based unit study program
Review: I have been using this wonderful curriculum for nearly a year now with my young children and have found it to be outstanding! Within the context of books that they love, my children have learned wonderful and valuable lessons in many subject areas. The supplemental resources available (Cookbook and Christian Character Supplement) have made it even more complete! Using Five in a Row has taught me a whole new approach to literature.

I have found the books very easy to obtain, either through purchasing or borrowing from the library. The few titles my library doe not own have been readily available through Inter-Library-Loan. What fun it is to revisit some of the older classic books and also be introduced to some new ones and see them from my children's perspective of wonder and discovery! I can't recommend Five In A Row highly enough!

Summary: I really wanted to like this curriculum!
Review: This book (and the other 2 volumes) have such wonderful books and ideas for teaching my kids. I have a 6 year old and 4 year old that will be doing this curriculum, but I can also use alot of the suggestions for my 3 year old too, as I teach the older two. I am so excited about using this curriulum!

Summary: Using it to supplement schoolwork
Review: WE JUST USED THIS CURRICULUM FOR MY KINDERGARTNER.....IT WAS A BLESSING TO OUR FAMILY...ANYBODY CAN USE THIS AS A SPRINGBOARD TO TEACHING YOUNG CHILDREN.....BE FLEXIBLE WITH IT: IF YOU WENT TO THE BEACH RECENTLY, USE THE TIDEPOOL BOOK (NIGHT OF THE MOONJELLIES), IF GRANDMA HAS A TRIP TO FRANCE PLANNED, DO MADELINE WHILE SHE IS THERE.

Summary: Great resource for top children's books
Review: While I am a homeschooling mom, I have to say that it would be foolish to dismiss this book simply because you don't homeschool. If you love books and want your children to love them, too, this can point you to the kind of book they will love. Many of the books are a joy to read, both for the parent and the child.

Also, one might get the impression that this book is not readily available from the way it is listed here, as a hard to find title. This isn't true. Amazon may have to special order it, but they should be able to get it without a problem.

I do have to offer one clarification, of sorts, from what some others have said. It is suggested that the lessons require no further preparation than glancing at this book and then getting started. That isn't true. If you want a curriculum where all the information your child needs is right there in front of him, this is NOT it. Five in a Row suggests *topics* on which to teach based on the book of the week. You may be learning about the Revolutionary War, or Japan, the sense of taste, or ducks. But if you want pictures related to that topic or some information about it on the child's level, you need to supplement with other books.

That should be achieved easily enough in the public library, same place many people get the FIAR books themselves. But it helps to know that in advance, rather than assume this material is something it's not.

For those who are interested in teaching their children the Charlotte Mason way, FIAR makes a GREAT curriculum. It will grow a love of literature. While my son sometimes resists his math and phonics lessons, he LOVES FIAR. He often asks me, "What are we learning today from the book?" I don't have to tell him, "It's time for *Papa Piccolo* (or whatever book we are on that week) twice. He's there, ready and waiting for the next lesson!
