Summary: Unrealistic, Anti-Police Garbage
Review: I was disappointed in this book. Dr. Stith has many examples and stories relating to the growing epidemic of juvenile violence. However, she does not provide any substantial study of the topic. She should have performed a sociological study using accepted standards to evaluate the effectiveness of her ideas on reducing this serious topic. In other words, she provide little in scientific or sociological benefit. She does not address the influence of the normal aggression that any young male of a species has in developing a place in their social group. A plan to utilize this knowledge and provide a workable solution could have been explored.

She does, however, provide a shocking and saddening description of the problem of adolescent violence. There is a tendancy towards sensationalism in this book and if the chaff were seperated from the grain, the book would have been about 70 pages long, instead of 220 or so.

A modest attempt, but no real substance.

Summary: Unrealistic, Anti-Police Garbage
Review: This book illustrates a flawed understanding of youth violence in the inner cities. The solution of making violence a public health issue works (ONLY on paper) and the concept of "community policing" is nothing new. Prothrow-Stith fails to mention the Senior Lead Officer, which is an important piece of this concept. There is a strong anti-police overtone throughout the book. I am certain this comes from the criminals the author has bonded with in the ER room. Too bad she hasn't walked the thin blue line and seen first hand the damage these criminals cause to their victims and society as a whole. Rather than demand they take responsibility for their actions, this book places blame elsewhere.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Essential readeing for educators and helping professionals
Review: This book not only clearly elucidates a growing problem but gives great ideas for being active in addressing the issues. It is both sobering and empowering.
