Rating: Summary: Happy Happy Joy Joy Review: Do you know any children who are struggling in school? Are you aware of any children who have the symptoms of ADD? Can you name any students who are "underachievers"? Would you like to be able to assist these students in putting an end to their frustration with the learning process? If the answer is yes, you must BUY THIS BOOK!As a parent of a communications handicapped child and an educational consultant and coach, this concise, easy to follow and implement book has shown me and can show you how to positively change students' behaviors, beliefs, lives and dreams. Dr. Blackerby's book simply and clearly explains how most students struggle in school because they have never been properly taught HOW to learn in the classroom. The system presupposes that because children have learned how to walk and talk and a million other things before they enter school, that they have the skills necessary to know how to learn in a school setting. This is no one's "fault". These faulty assumptions have been inherited through the years and feel natural as though "they are just the way we do things". Taking a hard look at them gives us a real opportunity for some significant changes. When a child doesn't know how to learn in school, they are constantly frustrated by the tasks given them. Next, their self esteem and confidence drops and sometimes they become behavior problems. By simply teaching students the visual learning strategies found in this book, students enjoy success where before there was struggle. They come to believe that there is nothing "wrong" with their brain and they have all the resources they need to be good students. This book is a must have for parents and teachers. Make your job easier by teaching students HOW to learn so they and you can Rediscover the Joy of Learning.

Rating: Summary: An NLP book on learning disabilities has finally arrived ! Review: Having learned about and become an ongoing student of NLP since 1987, I have been anxiously waiting the day when an NLP practioner published a guide on using the field of NLP to help understand and deal with learning disabilities at a more fundamental level. Don Blackerby has done that with this book. Especially useful to me were the sections on learning to read visually, ADD, and turning kids on to school or how to affect attitude. On his section on visual reading, Don points out how some kids start having a difficult time with reading around the fourth or fifth grade. It is that age where new terms, such as "government" and "extra-terrestrial", begin replacing familiar terms, such as "dog" and "family". Without an understanding of these new terms, overall comprehension goes down. For those struggling with reading at this age, Don suggests new terms be learned by developing mental visual pictures of their meanings that are easily recalled. This approach allows for much easier comprehension of the overall reading material. His definition of ADD was very helpful in better understanding what is happening in a person's mind who has ADD, and what mind-based strategies can be used, as well as changes in beliefs about one's mind, to help those with ADD. If you know someone with ADD that is a poor speller, Don can explain to you why that person is a poor speller, and how that person can learn to become a good speller. Great book.
