Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Highly recommended
Review: I highly recommend this book for beginning social workers or anyone who is interested in social policy. This book is well-written and easily-read. It provides a good historical overview of social welfare in America, beginning with what life was like for oppressed populations in colonial times and continuing up to the 20th century. It includes factual information on FDR's New Deal, social reform, the war on poverty, The Americans with Disabilities Act, history of voting rights, minimum wage, the TANF program, and how to write a policy brief, to name a few. This book was fundamental for me as a beginning social worker at the bachelors level, as well as quite useful at the social work graduate level. It is a must read for anyone who chooses to work with oppressed populations.
