Review: Compiled by Lou Goble of Willamette University, this hefty book contains introductions to a variety of topics in logic and philosophy of language. These essays are derived from work in the tradition of "philosophical" (rather than "mathematical") logic, inspired by the work of the Vienna Circle and represented in the US and Australia by students of Alan Ross Anderson and Nuel Belnap of the University of Pittsburgh; it is one of the finest student anthologies ever dedicated to a particular academic topic, but as such it is liable to be neglected by those interested in similar fields pursued differently. Namely, formalist critics of literature and those engaged in the formal modelling of natural processes; both groups of scholars would do well to examine this book, which goes quite a distance in their direction without losing the character of 20th-century logic (the diving of rigorous limits on our understanding of inferential processes) and further work along these lines, such as is currently widely available from the CSLI-Stanford and FOLLI imprints: in my opinion, the traditional concerns of the Anderson-Belnap school have been "built out" for quite some time (although many books in that style are available in most university libraries).
