Summary: easy to use remote; tech support story
Review: After two months of use, I've decided that I like the Kameleon remote quite well. Some of the reasons why:

I like the look and feel. It's ergonomic to hold and light-weight. (5.6 ounces without batteries).

I love the bright backlighting. The buttons are easy to see.

It's laid out in a way that makes sense. Other people have been able to use it without help (except for what the macros do). It's easy to set up.

It doesn't lose the codes when you change the batteries.

The remote has lights that activate when it is working. That way I know if I'm pressing the button properly.

It's upgradeable by telephone.

There is excellent internet support (www.oneforall-int.com/comfiles/index2.html). The "oneforall" web page has a demo that is great. It shows the remote in fantastic detail.

I called tech support. Someone answered within a minute or two, had the needed information, and volunteered to email me more information related to my equipment. They were dedicated to ensuring that I could program any function to the Kameleon remote. I had found a code that would operate an old CD player, but I still didn't have all the functions that the original remote had, such as repeating a song or an entire CD. They had codes to program keys to perform the functions that had existed on the original (now lost!) remote. I was stunned.

I've used a number of different remotes and this one is my favorite. I think the short battery life is due to two things: the bright backlighting and my own tendency to keep the light activated all the time! The backlighting is too nice, much better than other remotes that I've used, and I don't want to give that up. I use rechargeable batteries. I don't think I've captured how really well that I like this remote. Highly recommended.

Summary: Love this remote...disabling the tilt feature works!!!
Review: Bought this remote because I have frequent houseguests and no one can figure out my other remotes (which button controls what/when/etc). Liked the fact that this remote only displays the controls you need for the component you're trying to control. Makes things much simpler. Was concerned about the issues raised here and on other forums about the back-light feature and the tilt feature. The instruction manual (bought mine at Best Buy not Radio Shack)had VERY clear instructions about how to turn off the tilt and how to set the time for the back-light feature. Also like the fact that you can set up a macro to turn on and off the components you use most often with one press of the power button. Can also program the remote to "lock into" one component for volume. Then no matter what component you're in, the volume button will control the component your "locked into". Again this is nice because you don't have to switch between components for volume purposes. It also makes it easy for houseguests as they don't have to remember which component controls the volume. Have only had the remote for 2 days so can't comment on the battery life issue but I'm assuming turning off the tilt will take care of this as discussed in other reviews. Programming was very simple even for someone technologically challenged like me. Again, really like this remote, just wish I had gotten it from Amazon as it's definitely cheaper than Best Buy (even with shipping).

Summary: Required fix or batteries die fast.
Review: Found a fix for this expensive Kameleon 8 URC 9960 remote control with the blue Pelikon illuminated buttons. The remotes works fine but these guys screwed the wake up portion of it... the thing turns on with minor vibrations, i.e. walking near it, so it drains the batteries real fast... like 4 AAA's gone every 2 weeks without even using the friggen thing.

Pissed me off so I tore it apart and found this fix: Remove the batteries, remove the 2 screws underneath. Carefully pry off the black plastic part from the front aluminum bezel (yes its hard to do). On the back in the middle of the PCB on the side is a small metal box soldered to the PCB and just below it is R34, a SMT (surface mount) resistor... desolder and remove it. The resistor is a 1 Meg Ohm pullup resistor for the vibration sensor (that metal box). Remove R34 and you are done reassemble your remote.

Vibrations will no longer turn the remote on. To turn the remote on just press any button... the first time you press a button the thing just wakes up / lights up and doesn't do anything until you press another button.

Cheers

Summary: I like this remote a lot
Review: I don't have a lot of experience with universal remotes. i got this one at circuit city.

very attractive and clean design: no buttons at all when it is off. very comfortable to hold, and control with one hand, it's shape being very typical for a remote (unlike many learning remotes, such as the sony, which is too wide to control with one hand).

it wakes up with movement, which is very easy, but it means you have to wiggle the remote before adjusting volume or changing channel. a bit repetitive.
set up was easy, and controls my devices well, including my 5-disc dvd changer, and my Harmon-Kardon AVR125, although i cannot access all of the commands on the receiver (such as changing surround-sound settings). also, the receiver remote has separate on and off buttons, while the Kameleon's power button only turns it on.

overall, i like it mostly because of it's excellent design. i wish it did a little better controlling my receiver, but i guess i can teach it a few commands.

Summary: Very poor battery life!!!
Review: I got this remote with brand new brand-name alkaline batteries. This unit eats up all the batteries in just two week! I even had the backlight turned way down. Some reviewers here said just buy some expensive batteries, but why do I as a consumer need to accomodate a defective product?!

After my poor experience, I just returned it to the store. Please refrain from buying it until they fixed the battery consumption problem.

Summary: Decent remote but not for me
Review: I had hoped this would be the solution to my home theater problems, but it wasn't to be.

The remote certainly looks cool, and does a good job with the basics of each device (including my Tivo) however it still requires you to select a device and then hit buttons to control it - so to watch a movie I have to hit "DVD" then "Power" then "Monitor" then "Power" then "Receiver" then"Power" then "DVD-Multi"... I can do this but if you're less tech-savvy, you'll still need instructions, which defeats the purpose. The Harmony Remotes are more expensive but they can do this with one button press - I now have one and it is the real deal.

Also - I agree with several of the other posters - the thing eats batteries - the glowing action is too sensitive and stays on almost all the time.

Summary: The Best Remote for the Common Man
Review: I have consolidated 6 remotes (TV, VCR, CD, DVD, Cable, Audio Reciever) under Kameleon. Everything works fine and set up was easy. The best feature is the home theater function. With a press of a bottom all the features of my DVD, Reciever and TV are on one screen. No switching between devices. This is the remote I needed. The batteries are out of the old remotes and they are in storage should they be needed in the future. This is the perfect remote for average home theater user that seeks simplicity yet wants a state of the art device. And you cannot beat the price. Comparable models that do similar things cost twice as much and take a degree from MIT to set up.

Summary: This product made my day and my wife even likes it......
Review: I have had remotes from this company before and they have worked fairly well with my mostly Sony system and my Comcast Motorola Digital cable box. This remote however is 10x better.
.
One of the better points about this remote is a home theater setting which allows you to set the default system for volume, another for channel, and even another for play/ff/rev. In home theater mode my sound is handled by the reciever, my channel by the cable box, and I still have full Guide functions on cable.

There is a PVR sub menu for tivo type systems but I have not used it. This remote worked great with my system and I would have given it a 5 if the sony reciever had a little better coverage of the functions on it. I pointed the old remote at this one for one or two functions I was not getting but even that went well.

You will have to work through the manaual a bit to set everything. I gave myself 2 hours and that included most of the programming.

Summary: Great Remote!
Review: I have used this remote for 3 months now and love it. It controls my Sony Tivo/DSS box, TV, Stereo, DVD and VCR and the macro and theater setting are great and easy to program.

I dont know what the deal is with the batteries for some people My friend has changed his once and I have never changed mine. The remote turns on when it feels vibration so maybe the people with battry troubles are putting the remote somewhere where it stays on a lot, I dont know.

If I had to choose my only problem with it, it would be that sometimes I have to keep moving it while fast forwarding Tivo so it wont shut off and I miss my stopping point.

Summary: This thing is too cool!
Review: I just purchased this remote and I must say that I love it! I guess mines newer because I have the option of turning of the motion sensor. It controls everything and looks futuristic. At night this puppy shines and its glow is adjustable. There isnt much this thing wont do! I love it! For a conversation piece and an all around killer remote this is a must buy!
