Summary: Bought it, returned it
Review: Basically useless, unprogrammable and incapable of being used for ANY DVD players, including Sony! Their tech support guy wasn't any help figuring this out either. Looks nice though. Sony should pull this from the market.

Bottom line, if you're tired of wasting time looking for a remote, buy a Sony RM-VL900 and you'll be glad you spent the money. It's the cheapest Sony programmable/pre-programmed remote that can handle your entire stereo system, none of the others come close.

Summary: A great remote... 4 years ago
Review: I bought one of these remotes about 3-4 years ago. At the time, it was a really great remote. It ran all my AV equipement just fine and was easy to use. I really like the LCD display at the top that tells you what component is selected. It has also proved extremely durable. I thoroughly abused mine and it still works fine.

Unfortunately, as AV systems have become more complex, I have outgrown this remote. For a Universal remote to be truely universal, it needs to be able to learn commands from other remotes. Macro buttons also go a long way towards making the remote easy to use. This remote is not learning and has no macro buttons. You'll have to hit 7-8 keys or more to turn your system on or off. If you component isn't on the pre-programmed list, you can't run it with this remote.

Last year I purchased an RM-VL900. It is very similar to this remote in both feel and layout, but is learning and has macros. The difference in usability is huge. If you really want a remote that will replace all of your existing remotes and actually make your system easier to use, spend a little more and get a learning remote with macros. 4 years ago I would have heartily recommended this remote. Now it's out of date and obsolete.

Summary: doesn't work with DVD
Review: I dubiously purchased this remote because it was cheap and I thought it would control practically everything we have. Since we lost the remote to our Sony receiver, I'm overall pleased that this controls the reciever as well as the CD player. Here is a breakdown of the goods and bads.

Great:

* LCD Display tells you which unit it's controlling (I always hated the fact that most universal remotes don't tell you what you're currently controlling!
* Controls all Sony products well. Controls TV and VCR--coding is not a mystery because of the convenient display.
* Cheap

Bummer:

* This was made in '97, so does it not control DVD players.
* I tried both codes for our satellite receiver, it does seem to control it with one exception: There is no equivalent button for OK--i.e. after I enter the channel number or move around the guide, I cannot hit OK to view the channel!!! VERY BAD!

The Bottom Line: Display is a great idea, but if you want to control your DVD or satellite, try something newer!

Summary: Works great...easy to use.
Review: I have a wife and 2 children who could never work my old multi-function remote. The LCD display makes this one dummy proof. All of my components were easy to program and the remote works great with all of them.

Summary: Excellent Value
Review: I have this remote for almost 6 months. It has mostly but not quite replaced my other remotes. The remote cannot learn, and the pre-programmed functions do not fully operate all my equipment (Yamaha RXV-595 reciever, Proscan TV, Proscan DVD, Scientific Atlanta Digital Cable box, Yamaha CD).

The size is perfect, and the LCD is very useful. The remote is simple to use, and the buttons are laid out in a logical way. The LCD backlights when a button is pressed.

The remote is used for about 80-90% of the functions I need with the rest coming from the manufacturer's remotes. If they made this a learning remote, it would the absolute best.

If you take the time to confirm that this remote fully operates your equipement, you will be very happy.

Summary: Looks great, but doesn't work with a lot of things
Review: I have to confess, that i did get this remote for the looks, most are ugly and plain, but I ended up fidning that it didn't work with my cable box, which sort of defeats the purpose of me having one.

Summary: Not very good
Review: I just bought a JVC TV, Sony VCR, Sony DVD Player, and Sony Receiver with Surround Speakers. I needed one remote control to rule them all so I reasoned since the majority of black boxes were SONY, I should buy the Sony Universal remote for best compatibility.

To my Surprise, the remote worked with the JVC TV and Sony VCR but would not work the the Sony DVD or Sony Receiver. I think this is an older universal remote, cira 2000 and doesn't support the newer Sony IR protocols. Oh well, I am taking it back to Circuit City and continuing the quest for one remote to rule over all the devices.
