Rating: Summary: The Thrill (Price) of Reckless Independence Review: Follow the compelling story of Chris McCandless as chronicled by Jon Krakauer. Both men seemed at once sensitive and at odds with phoney, stiff, sanitized society. Both men ran to find the thrill of independence and self-sufficiency in the wilds of nature. Both seem to find what they are looking for. McCandless finds it and never lives to tell about it. His story is compassionately related by Krakauer, who seems more kin than journalist. A stunning, captivating true story, excellently told.
Rating: Summary: Very good jornalistic writing !! Review: In my opinion, the history of McCandless tells only one thing: he was a basket case. Completely lost. I don't care about what were his ideas, his dreams. You just don't throw your life away, like he did, with no reason at all. It's not right! But Krakauer job is another history. He wrote a well reserched book, full of details and great sensibility. Very good reading.
Rating: Summary: Fascinating adventure! Review: Into the Wild was an excellent book. As a mother of a teenage boy, it broke my heart to think of Chris' mother and what she has had to endure. At one point during the book, I wondered why any of us have children - knowing at some point they will break our hearts! But Chris was a soul that would not rest and he pushed himself to the edge. This book helped me to understand why someone would live their life that way (as I have never had those feelings). Therefore, I found this book extremely interesting, very well written and quite thought provoking. I recommend it!
Rating: Summary: an incredible book on the need for rite of passage for men Review: an inspiring look at a young man's search for meaning in life. although he died, his life was not wasted. it's a must read for anyone who is thoughtful and introspective. made me cry.
Rating: Summary: This book does not work Review: This was the type of book that makes me want to wach paint dry. It drowns on about a self-absorbed CHILD. That he went into something with alomost no idea what he was doing. This was the type of person that would have got lost in a closet. The writing was like a bad news article from a tabloid. It glorified a sad ture story of someone that was vastly unpreppared for what they were doing.
Rating: Summary: Into The Wild will leave you thinking all night long. Review: When I finished reading "Into The Wild," I couldn't stop thinking about how a few mistakes cost Chris McCandless his life. This book also made me think about what life would be like if I left my home, and tried to live in the wild. Many people from Alaska called Chis an idiot, and said that he had no bussiness in the wild, but I think that he had as much a right to be in the wild as they do. What do you think? If you haven't read this book yet, you should.
Rating: Summary: I book that leaves you thinking Review: This book is very confusing. Since Krakauer didn't know all the facts and to a point took Chris's side, I think that he was partial to him since he was a mountain man. My opinion is on the up side, it is a story of a man trying to find his way in life by doing things his way. But if you look at it logically, he had his whole life ahead of him and didn't need to do unnessary risks to prove a point. I think that it is about a lost little boy that never wanted to be found.
Rating: Summary: It could have been worse! Review: The book INTO THE WILD was a book that I was forced to read for school, so I guess that my opinion on of this book also relates to the fact that I didn't want to read it. Anyway I will try and be as unbiased as possible. This book had some neat parts, I can't remember quite where they were, but I know that there had to be some? But atleast I got to read the babbalings of Mr. Krakauer and how he thought Mr. Supertramp (Chris) effected him profoundly. Well, I guess I can't blame the author, after all It was a true story, but I would like to. If you like a book about stupided people who go into the frozen land of Alaska, with alot of rice and a plan to find themselves out there, you will love this book, but if not read ENDRE'S GAME!
Rating: Summary: Insightful and inspiring Review: The story of how Chris became Alex is very deep and interesting. Since it is a true story, it is amazing that he actually does some of the stuff that he did. I know very few people who could do these sort of things. Krakuer did some great research to find the trail of a man who didn't want to be found, so it was well written. Some slow parts are when he talks about other people, and when he talks about himself. Anybody on their own would be able to identify with Chris, and I admire his independence.
Rating: Summary: Good writing, sub-par story Review: Although this is a compelling story, I was left feeling fairly angry and annoyed with McCandless. Though his spirit was strong, he made irrational and foolish decisions. I was angry at him for leaving his family in the dark for so long, most notably his sister who he claimed to be very close with. Why wouldn't he have just contacted her once in awhile to let her know he was alive?? Krakauer's writing is smooth and compelling- and I think he does a good job of staying objective and letting the reader decide for themselves what they think of McCandless. For me, I think he was lost in more ways than one - and it was his hubris and underestimation of the power of the wilderness that ended his life too soon.
