Rating: Summary: LIKE YOU WERE THERE Review: THIS BOOK WAS HARD TO PUT DOWN AND A WONDERFUL STORY ABOUT HOW MUCH LOVE YOU CAN GET FROM WILD ANIMALS IF YOU GIVE THEM THE SAME. I HAVE MANY BOOKS LAYING AROUND AND THIS IS THE ONLY ONE THAT GETS PICKED UP AND READ BY GUESTS WHO STOP BY MY HOME. I FIND THEM MISSING AND OFF SOMEWHERE READING THIS BOOK. THE STORIES ARE UNBELIEVABLE AND WHEN YOU TURN THE PAGE THERE IS A PICTURE TO PROVE THE STORY. THERE ARE MANY PICTURES, WHICH IS NICE.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book about what black bears are truly like. Review: This is a book written with honesty and modesty. Just when you think you know what you're talking about where bears are concerned, they prove you wrong...over and over again. I have been involved in black bear research in Minnesota for over 11 years. It made me laugh out loud and cry. It brought back memories and experiences that I thought very few people would understand. You are are two people who do understand. To this day, I have your photo of "conversation with a bear" from the Herald on my desk next to some of my own favorite bear photos. Everyday it makes me smile. Thank you Jack and Patty for this wonderful book. I will cherish it.

Rating: Summary: What is possible with patience and understanding. Review: With an appreciation of the necessities of wild animals and their general desire to remain alive this book indicates an accommodation, or better, an understanding and appreciation of the emotions of each species can create a bond and affection making life more attractive and interesting.jduffy@mau.com
Rating: Summary: What are black bears really like? Review: You'll discover when you read the true story of my wife Patti and my experiences with the black bears of northeastern Minnesota. A Book of the Month Club selection, it is illustrated with 42 photos to show how close we really were to these bears. Farley Mowat, wuthor of Never Cry Wolf, says "Summers with the Bears" is a small miracle in understanding those others whom we set apart as 'animals'. Unpretentious, totally honest, utterly revealing, it stands alone in my experience with animal books. It is a fully transparent window into the real world that we are in danger of losing." Arnette Heidcamp, author of A Hummingbird in My House and Bluebirds in My House, says "Summers with the Bears is both a bittersweet yet delightful "Born Free"-type book that will appeal to animal lovers of all ages, and an excellent first-hand account of black bear behavior that will make a valuable contribution to our knowledge of this species." In addition, Library Journal says "This is a delightful and warm tale of Becklund's experiences with black bears. Illustrated with enchanting photos, this is an enjoyable read." Kirkus says, "You know you're a bear when heaven is a rotten log full of grubs and ants. You know you've found ursine nirvana when you have both a rotten log and a pal like newspaperman Becklund . . . Pleasant and curious as the story is, it would not have the impact it does without the photographs."
